Safety in hindsight... again, whom controls that software and the updates? sure you can turn off auto update, but it could be hacked to turn on... it's "software". If so, and it auto drives itself... it could auto drive you off a cliff into the water and drown you. Do you have a device to break the window if you go into the water? If not, no way out.

On the topic of science-fiction, I liked several stories recounting transhumanist fever dreams. When the internet of things reaches the level of the internet of implants.

In Minority Report, our eyes are augmented to receive personalised advertisement, so when you step in a store, your retina displays ads tailored for you, based on your socioeconomic profile.

In Ghost in the Shell, your eyes are vulnerable to piracy, so hackers can hijack your vision and broadcast for you an environment looking like the real one but it is a photorealistic recording instead.

Both of these stories are 20+ years old, but I believe we're progressively getting there. Especially the part about tailored ads tracking you on every site you visit, mapping and relaying constant data to a collective of vendors taking great pleasure in predicting what you should want to buy next.

Surely gunpowder didn't feel safe when it's been invented, the same for any weapon ever invented. You don't want drones today, but you'll get them anyway because you don't decide about tech. It is tech, as a whole, deciding for you. And me.

I understand what you mean. I think there’s still some room for human choice in how things develop, even if it’s difficult. But the main problem ; think it’s a very small group that understands it, not the majority. “And many others just think that the more technology we have, the more happiness we’ll get. @Maybe_Maybe_not I see what you mean, and there’s some truth in it, many people are so focused on daily pressures like work, bills, and responsibilities that they don’t really have the time or mental space to step back and think long-term about bigger risks or trends.
At the same time, it’s not always just about free time. Even people who are very busy sometimes do reflect on risks and changes; it often also depends on education, awareness, and what information they’re exposed to.
So I’d say it’s a mix: lack of time can limit reflection, but access to perspective and awareness also plays a big role.

Even now, if you have a car that you've not completely paid for, the car will start itself and drive itself to an impound yard or back to the dealer, where it can be repossessed.

Yes it does for certain cars for other cars. If you don't pay for them when you take them from the dealer or wherever you got them, they hide a GPS locator in them. When you don't pay for them, they ping the locator and send out the repo guys. Same thing pretty much..

Well, in order for the car to drive itself up, it has to have self-driving, and there's only a few cars that will do that. A car that mainly does that well is the Tesla.
