No. The term “semite” is actually frequently used inappropriately. It’s almost exclusively used to refer to Jewish people. Outside of that use, which is inaccurate, it’s basically obsolete.
Since it’s primarily used now to refer to Jews, i would argue that semitism is a creed. Therefore antisemitism is bigotry like any other religious prejudice.
If you can justify prejudice against Islam, and i imagine you can, then surely you can understand how someone might be prejudiced against Judaism or even Christianity.
As far as actual semitism, i imagine it was discontinued because it was overly broad. The many and various peoples grouped into semitism were actually quite different in many ways, including ideologically. They might not have appreciated being lumped together like that.
Now we pretty much only hear or see the word in terms of antisemitism, which is primarily framed as anti-Jew. I, for one, do not concede that there is any cause for alarm over antisemitism. It’s every bit as overstated as racism, sexism and any other all too common cry of victimhood in this day and age.
