Why does California take so long to count ballots?

Australia is smaller than California but because we used preferential voting (ranked choice) in the house of reps and the even more complicated Hare-Clark system in our senate it in take quite some because after all the first preferences are counted the candidate with fewest vote is eliminated and and his votes are counted again for second preferences.

It takes time. If there are a lot of candidate all this vote redistribution bezzo can take quite some. The in the senate - aside from preferences the is a quota system as well.

Usually the who has won gov't is known that night and who has won the senate in a week.

In one election it took two months and one week to count all the votes cause no one won the house so lots of recounts.

Are we slower than California? If not it is pretty appalling.

It's a lot bigger than you think. You really start to feel it when you drive from one end to the other, like I've done. Even flying a small plane takes a long, long time.

That's true, even if the northern areas are less populated than the areas further south. My parents are driving north through the entire state. They drove from where we live, Missouri, to Berkley. To avoid the mountains, they went south through New Mexico and Arizona. Therefore, they entered near the southern tip of the state.

i do believe california cheats in elections. i'm sure every election has cheats to some extent regardless if the cheat was successful. but when the public knows it's not possible for the outcome and you cheat anyway, that's when the revolution begins.

Why don't you provide some proof for that. So far there has never been any proof that California has cheated in any election. We just don't vote for the people that you think we should vote for and nobody really cares about that.

no. the problem is your leaders kind of act like republicans even when they're democrat. it should be against the law to vote against your constituency or that's exactly their next play. no one will be for American parties and it will be a popularity contest again. and you don't want that winner. they are easily bought by isreal because they are in it for the money. i really hope i'm wrong but after this next election we'll see where we really stand and what we have to do.

Well, we don't use ballots that can have hanging chads, thank God, and we don't really have any trouble with counting. We just count repeatedly to make sure we get it right.

We print the ballots and have to mail them because we don't believe in making people walk or drive to a polling place the way you do.

To me its just extremely insecure but thats a country thing. My nearest polling place is a 5 minute walk. The second nearest polling place is a 5 minute walk. The third nearest polling place is a bit further away and easily an 8 minute walk.

Its because here they use elementary schools for it which are readily available. Just sheer scale so there is always one nearby. Same for trainstations for transit and other popular buildings.

You solve the need to mail things in by just having a ton of them.

Yep, that's definitely a way to solve that problem. As long as everybody can get there, it doesn't matter.

Milling things in has been a solution for these kinds of problems since the day of of the revolutionary war in the 1700s. It still works. I just mailed my own ballot and got a receipt a few days later from the registrar's office. This whole thing is not complicated unless you want to make it that way. I reiterate we do not have voting fraud in California and never have had a single instance of it here.
