Well, we don't use ballots that can have hanging chads, thank God, and we don't really have any trouble with counting. We just count repeatedly to make sure we get it right.

We print the ballots and have to mail them because we don't believe in making people walk or drive to a polling place the way you do.

To me its just extremely insecure but thats a country thing. My nearest polling place is a 5 minute walk. The second nearest polling place is a 5 minute walk. The third nearest polling place is a bit further away and easily an 8 minute walk.

Its because here they use elementary schools for it which are readily available. Just sheer scale so there is always one nearby. Same for trainstations for transit and other popular buildings.

You solve the need to mail things in by just having a ton of them.

It's a lot bigger than you think. You really start to feel it when you drive from one end to the other, like I've done. Even flying a small plane takes a long, long time.

That's true, even if the northern areas are less populated than the areas further south. My parents are driving north through the entire state. They drove from where we live, Missouri, to Berkley. To avoid the mountains, they went south through New Mexico and Arizona. Therefore, they entered near the southern tip of the state.
