Nowadays, Germans seem to take pride not in being German, but in being lesbian/gay. On the other hand, Poles, Hungarians, and Serbs have caught my attention. Every nation constructs its nationalism in a different way.

Among Serbs, there is a reaction shaped by centuries of Ottoman rule. Hungarians see Western society as decadent and do not want to resemble it. Poles, meanwhile, want to remain Catholic and do not host refugees in their country.

LOL, being "proud" of your nationality is about as meaningless as being "proud" of your height.

You had no input in the country you were born in, just like you had no input into your height or race.

Hence it's a good way to find the insular, jingoist, small minded dimwit in your circle. All they have to be "proud" of is "their country" like they had any meaningful contribution to it.

Human beings are herd animals by nature. They gather under a common roof, adopt certain values as their banner, and say, "We are different from you." This can be religion, nationality, or an ideology.

To move forward and achieve things, people need motivation and enthusiasm, and that often begins with a sense of pride. Having none of it at all, or having too much of it, can both lead a person toward complacency and stagnation.
