Do you respect your elders?

I had the displeasure of witnessing a kid of say, 11 or 12 being a smart Alec with a cashier in a convenient store. Its an ugly sight.
I had a couple of friends as a teenager who were this way. One incident had the two, who were sidekicks, throwing their inappropriately prepared cheeseburgers at the manager of a Sonic drive in. Its a burger joint. One hit the man in the head. His hair fell off. It wasn't funny though. It was disgusting!

I always get this, "As long as they are respectful of ME!" Huh, yeah. Completely missing the point. Its easy to remove yourself from their presence if they ARE snippy or moody. Who knows what their day has been like. Its obviously something.

So how about you? Are you the bigger person or just a low-class product of society?

Older and wiser is a fallacy so of course I don't. A teacher once told me something that I knew was 100% wrong yet they blank face told me I'm too young to understand, I pulled out my phone got the answer and just showed it off.
Naturally he was mad rather than ya know a smart enough guy to admit and learn.
Also kids are going to be kids so don't really get that point. Might annoy us yes but it's what they do. And much better than the kids who are actually involved in serious crime.

There's no fallacy. Its the simple act of respecting where they've been. Its a shame you don't understand and obvious it can't be explained to one who knows it all already. Its a nicer world to be in when we all pay attention as in a family. And have that common sense while paying attention to what goes on around us. Then the respect flows easily and everyone is happier. You would be surprised what can be learned by those who have already lived the years you're about to.

I actually agree with Kaneki here. Just because someone is older doesn't make them naturally correct nor deserving of respect when they lack decorum themselves.

Truly being older and wiser means knowing when to admit mistakes using those life experiences as a guideline to know it's the right thing to do.

Being stuck in your ways isn't wisdom nor is relying solely on your own life experiences. Everyone experiences the world in different ways. Yes, we can explain what things were like for us to younger generations so they gain perspective, but it doesn't make us right and our perspective doesn't make us 100% correct.

Respect is earned, not given.

I never disrespect anyone, elder or otherwise.
But I will never bend a knee to them either.
If I’m assaulted, even with words, I will stand my ground.


I had some friends who would joke about doing it with each-other’s moms.
I never joined in and certainly never allowed anyone to mention my own mom.
In that sense I absolutely do respect the elders


But a teacher once wrongfully wanted to punish me because i messed up an equation, it was an honest mistake but he insisted that I didn’t study for it.
I was 14, and I took HIM to the principal’s office, and demanded the punishment be removed as I did nothing wrong.
Neither he nor the principal liked that very much but they agreed anyway, because I presented a bulletproof case and followed up with the ultimatum “expel me if you want I won’t do the punishment”

I generally try to be respectful/polite to people unless they give me a very good reason not too (no I'm not throwing burgers lol).

Also I don't respect someone just because they are older than me. Everyone gets the same base level of respect and everything above that needs to be earned.

I'll show everyone basic respect until they give me a reason not to, but I'm not specifically going to respect you just because you're older than me. All that tells me is you haven't killed yourself. Anything more than basic human respect is earned.

It's funny that you mentioned kids mistreating workers when old people are out here yelling and belittling kids juggling school and having a job. Just the other day I witnessed an old dude yelling and being racist as fuck to someone's 16 year old daughter working the register. What's respectable about that?

Usually, I've noticed, someone who is disrespectful to an elder has a few things going for them. They are arrogant and a touch spoiled by parents that use new toys to keep their child occupied. I've encountered rude people who were older than me. Who hasn't?
Maybe it comes down to having a kind heart.

That's what you have noticed because that's what you want to be true. I grew up with very strict parents who often used the phrase "respect your elders". Then, I grew up and realized it was a bullshit phrase.
