The mosquitoes have gotten bad the last couple days. The flies usually don't get bad until fall. I'm from northern Wisco lol If you live near water, the mosquitoes will be a lot worse, I've been told. Don't you live near a lake?
No, it's a river that takes me to a lake about a mile away. It seems the mosquitoes are way worse this year than the last couple but it could be because the water level was a little higher.
Black flies are out. Mosquitoes will be out in force this weekend.
I took some life jackets my boat for this weekend's festivities and was attacked by mosquitoes. It seems just a couple days ago there weren't any.
It's crazy like that. Here, the heat on the 4th of July just ramps them little fuckers up.

Around my (rural) home both are very limited. But even a single one annoys me personally.

They can be there in plenty. Add 'sand flies' if you want.
Not scarce. There's also plenty of ants, ticks and such.
Just... not everywhere.
Such insects enjoy moisture, dirt, food left-overs and similar.
So if we stay away from poor or uneducated people, there's a good enough chance to stay on top of things.
Doesn't mean that one has to lock up oneself in an ''expatriate environment''.
In my own small garden I grow lemon grass, which is a natural repellent. And even if I live with local natives, I manage to keep the place clean, dry, and tidy enough to be unattractive to insects.
No. It seems that Bill Gates has not dropped off any mosquitoes or ticks to this part of the USA... YET
