Stories are meant to put children to sleep and to wake up adults. Do you agree?

There's a phrase I heard recently, I don't know whose quote it is.

"Stories are meant to put children to sleep and to wake up adults."

Do you agree? Do stories (both in written or televised form) wake you up, make you think and allow you to put things in perspective? I think that the worst thing we can do as an adult is taking things for granted. Stories are an escape route into our imaginative world.
