You cannot "abolish" the senate without a constitutional change and fundamental change to US voting and government structure.

It's true the US is stuck in the 1800's and needs to modernise. But the number of changes required is not something the current setup can do.

Saying the Senate could not be abolished without a fundamental constitutional change does not prove the report is a lie—it confirms how radical the proposal is. The Senate is established by the Constitution, and Article V says no state may be deprived of equal representation in it without that state’s consent. The fact that the existing constitutional system makes abolition extraordinarily difficult is precisely why Americans should take the DSA’s proposal seriously and oppose it.

The report is already linked in the poll description above. It concerns a proposed new DSA national platform, not a separate political party. DSA has also published material openly debating abolition of the Senate, although its currently public 2024 platform only calls for ending the filibuster. That distinction is worth noting while the proposed platform is being reported on.

It is explicitly in the article. It states, word for word: “The Democratic Socialists of America plan to launch a plan that involves getting rid of the U. S. Senate in order to change America.” The article also says the plan was expected to be formally released the following week, which is why I previously distinguished the reported proposal from the then-public platform.

This idea also did not appear from nowhere. DSA’s own materials have repeatedly advocated it. A 2021 DSA platform draft called for “Constitutional amendments to abolish the Senate,” and the second draft stated, “Abolish the Senate and the Electoral College.”

DSA’s own website has also published an article titled “Abolish the Senate,” while the constitution of Young Democratic Socialists of America states: “Abolish the Senate, the Supreme Court, and all other institutions of minority rule.” It then calls for replacing them with a unicameral national assembly.

To be completely precise, DSA’s currently displayed 2024 platform calls for ending the Senate filibuster and reducing the Supreme Court’s power rather than explicitly abolishing the Senate. But saying the linked article contains no reference to such a plan is simply incorrect, and claiming the idea has no basis in DSA’s own published material is equally incorrect.
