In 1789, French citizens stormed the Bastille, which is celebrated every 14 July (quatorze Juillet) in France, as French Independence Day.
It's important to note, but not described much in history classes, that French Independence, and the end of Royal Rule, is due, in part, to the successful American Revolution that took place a few years earlier.
How are you celebrating this French National Holiday?

I had fried chicken for dinner. Otherwise, no celebration.
What, they invented fried chicken? This and ff, hum!
@Cidknee Neither.
French fries wasn't from France? Why is it called that?
Bastille Day as an American?
By understanding The French Revolution took place because the everyday people couldn’t afford the simplest commodities, bread for example. And their leaders wouldn’t aide them in their time of need, “let ‘em eat cake” as the useless statement with no positive action for the people that reside in the kingdom.
What happened when those people didn’t get what they wanted, deserved, and aspired for against the needs and wants of the richest in the land? Revolution.
We can see a parallel between our modern world and back then.
So, if you are anti Revolution then support the everyday people in which are your equals. Don’t treat them like your villain because you have more common with them than you’d think. Get your best interests served or it will happen. And it is in your best interests you know to get involved politically and vote for small campaigns that hold your best interests at heart.
We can’t be neutral on a moving train God damn it.
We just got up and heard the sad news that France lost. I guess my brother in law and other Frenchman are not so happy.
we did host a French teen for 3 weeks before we left to our summer vacation.
we had a lot of French connections and
celebrated 7/4 with other French kids and thank the French for helping us
we also had French fries if that counts lol I am just being silly here now
They destroyed a possible tourist attraction. I think, that was unwise.
I was (today) aware of the French celebration day. And I'm happy for them.
Got no idea what that has to do with some ''American'' proceedings, though.
Will you Americanesians also claim credit for getting rid of the Russian or the German Emperors? :)
Maybe I'll put the Tour de France on for a few minutes while I wait for my kids to wake up? Sometimes it has some nice scenery when they're on one of the mountain stages.
@Calyptomaniac This is the last day of the Tour, when all the riders do a ceremonial ride down the Champs Elysee to the finish line in Paris. If you want to see scenery, check YouTube for some previous day's riides.
I am fairly sure they are nowhere near the end. It definitely always ends on a weekend, but I am pretty sure it just started last week.
@Calyptomaniac You are correct. I got my day's wrong. The end is 26 July in Paris.
There was a French yacht in the harbour today, if I knew what day it was I would have wished them a happy bastille day.
@AviatorTom Well, Tom I got seriously wounded while storming the Bastille, and have the scars to prove it😁😁😁😁😁😁
I remembered Cubby O'Brien of the Mickey Mouse Club and Hall Of Fame NFL player the Rev. Rosey Grier, who were 80 and 94 respectively yesterday, July 14.
I will buy an edition of Le Monde and read it. 😊
I’m not celebrating it because I’m not French.
Oh wait, doesn’t France play today? I was supporting the French national team anyway… I guess I’ll celebrate by supporting France against Spain then 😂
Spain 2 - France 0 😁
@TonyMetal___1986 yeah I was so upset lol. I think I got even more upset than when my favorite teams lost 🤣
But now that I cooled down, I think Spain deserved it at the end. They outsmarted the best team.
From this whole world cup, only this guy is stuck in my mind 😂😂

@TonyMetal___1986 hahaha yes Haaland is great. He’s made me a Manchester City fan 😂
By doing the same thing I do almost any day, taking care of patients that need help.
If I recall right, there was only one prisoner held at the infamous Bastille that day. It always makes me chuckle a bit. Viva La France!
I was there at the french embassy today playing France's national anthem!
I bring out my guillotine.
I'm watching the France - Spain match
I think I’ll eat some French fries
By knocking down doors!
I am not going to lose my head over it!!!
