I recently came across a map showing the countries that have apologized for their role in the slave trade. Interestingly, some African countries were on it as well. A friend joked, "Are they apologizing for having been enslaved?

We didn't enslave anyone. We simply bought slaves from Black slave owners, and in the end, we were the ones who abolished slavery 🇺🇸 🇬🇧

The fact slavery was already going on and had a long history is not justification for joining in or continuing.

Countries didn't own slaves, wealthy individuals and businesses did. Yes the government's of these countries at the time bare responsibility of allowing it to be legal but the general populace does not. Remember working conditions for many in those days were terrible and workers had next to no rights.

We've had 2 world wars since slavery days with millions killed in both yet within a few years we moved on and began interacting as if nothing happened. So why cling on to the wrong of the distant past from a world that doesn't exist?

Europe took advantage of a system that already existed. It practiced a horrible policy that had been common place in society. It then had revelation it wasn't acceptable and attempted to enforce the abolition of the practice throughout much of the world. Then it was forced to apologize for a practice that it didn't invent, had abolished, and is still currently practiced today. Suicidal empathy.

There isn't a skin color that hasn't been enslaved at some point in history. At this point, who cares who enslaved who as long as you live in a western country? that was hundreds of years ago and no one is participating in it, get over it.
