I'm gonna say neither... I know, I know, I'm a pain in the ass. I always break the rules. But hear me out.

• Early on I lived to work and sacrificed my life "for the greater good". But that turned out to be total bullshit.
• I moved on to self serving acquisition of power and wealth. But that turned out to be empty.
• These days I pick and choose where I will devote my time, and effort and knowledge and who will benefit and who will suffer. I'm enjoying myself at the moment.

Work to live for sure. I had a good job and got enjoyment out of it, but it was also hard and stressful. It also gave me identity and a certain amount of status. But I wouldn't have worked if I didn't need money to live and to save for the future.
I used to jokingly say that work got in the way of my personal life.

If I didn't have comfy passive income of real estate I would work for living. I work for others anyway just to get my specialization, than I go my own way.

Right now, it's working to live so I can get to the point where I live to work. I'm building something that I can truly say I love and if or when it becomes a sustainable income, I'm a happy camper

Kind of both for me... I really enjoy my work so in a way I do live to work... but again I seek out balance and try to have a life outside of work.

You can have different phrase of work life balance. Work extra hard early and put it in the stock market early to grow 2x evey 7 years.
