Young Americans will eventually become the voters, workers, parents, entrepreneurs, activists, and political leaders who shape the future of the United States. Two organizations are competing for very different visions of that future.
Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA), the youth and student section of the DSA, organizes young people around democratic socialism and says it seeks radical and structural change, including bringing key sectors of the economy under social control.
Turning Point USA (TPUSA) organizes students around limited government, free markets, fiscal responsibility, freedom, and conservative principles.
These movements represent sharply different ideas about economics, government, individual freedom, and the direction America should take. Which vision would you rather see influence the next generation of Americans?

I'm conservative, but I also believe that our government has way too much business in our lives and too much change - so much so that I can't keep up with it.
They took away our pennies and now daylight savings time. What's next?
@sage2021 I’m sure there will be other youth movements, and I wasn’t suggesting YDSA and TPUSA will literally be the only organizations young Americans can join. I chose these two because they directly represent the ideological conflict I’m concerned about right now.
On one side, YDSA is the youth and student wing of the DSA and is organizing the next generation around democratic socialism and the broader DSA agenda. I believe that agenda moves America toward a post-capitalist, collectivist system with important ideological connections to communism. On the other side, TPUSA is organizing young Americans around limited government, free markets, private property, individual liberty, and conservative principles.
So to me, these aren’t just two randomly selected youth organizations. They represent fundamentally opposing directions for America’s future. Other organizations will certainly exist, but many of them will ultimately align themselves with one side or the other of that larger ideological divide.
And I completely agree with you that government already has far too much involvement in our lives. That is another major reason I side with TPUSA rather than YDSA. I want the next generation defending individual freedom and limited government—not giving government or collective institutions even greater control over our economy and our lives.
I also understand what you mean about constantly having government policies changing things around us. Although, just to clarify, pennies themselves haven’t actually been taken away—they’re still legal tender; the government stopped producing new ones. And with daylight saving time, the House recently voted to make it permanent and end the twice-yearly clock changes, but that hasn’t become law yet because it still has to get through the Senate.
People can certainly agree or disagree with either of those decisions. But to me there is also an important difference between debating individual policies like pennies or daylight saving time and fundamentally restructuring our political and economic system. The latter is what worries me about the direction of YDSA and the broader DSA agenda.
So yes, I absolutely understand your frustration with government having too much business in our lives—and that concern is actually one of the reasons I come down firmly on the TPUSA side of this particular choice.

@canamlusciouslad73, I obviously disagree. I side with TPUSA because I would rather see the next generation influenced by limited government, free markets, fiscal responsibility, individual freedom, and private enterprise. Those are the principles TPUSA itself says it organizes students around.
YDSA is the youth and student wing of the DSA, and the DSA’s current program goes far beyond simply making healthcare or housing more affordable. It openly imagines a future without capitalism, identifies a classless society as its guiding goal, calls for public ownership of the largest corporations and essential industries, and seeks a new constitution and “new political system.”
That is fundamentally not the future I want for America’s young people. I want them inheriting a country where they remain free to own property, build businesses, create things, choose their own careers, and pursue their own version of the American Dream.
But since you chose YDSA, I’m genuinely curious: what specifically about YDSA’s vision makes you prefer it over TPUSA?
