If you say that the U. S. lost the war in Vietnam, lost the war in Iraq, and lost the war in Afghanistan, right-wing guys go crazy and start making up all kinds of ridiculous excuses about how the U. S. didn't "really lose." I'm wondering if they're going to do that when we lose in Iran.
You know they will! Their pride and part of their self identity is somehow intertwined with religiosity and American Exceptionalism—when you have that noxious combo, on top of being generally undereducated and low information to start with, then you get that type that you described.
The ones who are delusional and find it easier to believe what they’re told, and want the ‘myth’ to be true, and find the messy, harsh, complicated facts too inconvenient. And through a kind of self-denial, (similar to how MAGA thinks) …they ‘want’ to believe the U. S. is a rockstar, could do no harm, etc. etc. …. and actually think (for example) that Trump is a A-OK guy, looking out for them, and working hard every day for the people, and doesn’t lie all day every day.

The fact that no country wanted any part of this war and turned their backs to Trump should show you what other countries think of the US right now. Internationally, the US and Israel are pariahs right now buy you'll never know that if you watch filtered US media. Iran has the potential to be a more embarrassing loss than Afghanistan and Vietnam because it's showing weakness. A lot of tough talk coming from the US but a negative outcome. Talk is cheap if you don't back it up and until the US backs it up, it looks weak.

Vietnam and Afghanistan are certainly political disasters, but took place years after US combat troops were no longer involved.
1. The US began "vietnamization" in 1969 and pulled out most of it troops by 1972. The ARVN slowly replaced them. By 1971, there were no serious military efforts in Vietnam led by the USA. By 1973, the US completely withdrew.
2. In 1973, the Case Church amendment was signed preventing further US military involvement, and funding was cut drastically in 1974 for South Vietnam. Add the North receive record funding, the 73 oil crisis, and internal struggles. It turned into a disaster, and the ARVN collapsed in 55 days. Congress only allowed for Operation Frequent Wind, which removed US Citizens and at risk Vietnamese.

Afghanistan was similar.
1. The US ended its combat mission in 2014, after having withdrawn most of its troops between 2011 and 2014.
2. The ANDSF were responsible for all military activities, and carried most of them alone.
3. The ANDSF (and government at large) was horribly corrupt. Ghost soldiers, siphoned fundng, black market deals, stolen elections etc. The list is long. Many US troops struggled with them as allies.
4. The Taliban slowly defeated them over 7+ years, which culminated in a quick collapse in 2021. Biden was told by commanders to keep 2,500 in country to meet objectives, he unwisely decided against it.

If you followed the war, you would know traffic has always existed in the strait. Iran targets oil tankers with missiles and drones because they traversed lanes developed by the UN and Oman. This was the main reason they started targeting again (their own state claim, not mine).
Also, if you followed the war, you would know many of the current US targets have been ports, missiles sites, islands within the strait where Iran massed resources to attack oil tankers.
Instead you watch media mainly interested in attacking Trump, instead of recording the war.

Also, just check hormuz tracking data. All oil tankers have transponders. It's public record. It's certainly lower than pre war levels, but tankers cross the strait daily.

2. The US was restricted to certain air corridors and couldn't bomb AA targets for fear of killing Soviet advisors, let alone major cities This meant NVA forces could stock supplies easily and US air campaigns were limited in effectiveness.
3. The US was forced on the defensive throughout the war, since nearly all battles took place in South Vietnam (an ally).
