Why is there individual gun ownership in the United States?

It is enshrined as a natural right under the very first amendment in the Bill of Rights.

The founding fathers considered American citizens to be a reserve militia in case national defense was required.

Hunting and self defense are also obvious reasons.
Target shooting is also a popular sport and form of recreation.
These are rights of a free people. It's called individual liberty and self determination.

Given the number of guns in this country, it would be impossible to ban private ownership, especially from gangs and criminals.

The threat of gun violence and the number of firearm homicides is incredibly low, despite the hyperbolic propaganda by "gun control" promoters.
In reality, the one and only goal of "gun control" is to ban guns, not to save lives. They want to strip citizens of their historically cherished, constitutionally protected, God-given rights.

It was put in place by the Founders of the country so that the populace can fight back against a tyrannical government. The only way we were able to revolt against the British was because the population had comparable arms to the soldiers.

So the Founders vowed that we would have access to arms and the 2nd Amendment was put in place to insure that the government was stopped from interfering with that right. With this we are safer as a people from the likes of the moronic Democrats who would take most of our rights away. Now they fear us though so they don’t.

Because it is America, we set our Constitution so we could have weapons for our own protection and not wind up like Europe or Australia with no guns. Let them be happy with their gun laws, and we are happy with our laws

Well it's not like you can have community gun ownership and then in some awkward fashion have different members of the community have access to a single gun.

It is allowed in the constitution but it has lead to an awful lot of murders, suicides etc.

Drugs aren’t allowed and that has lead to a lot of deaths. It isn’t about what is allowed, it is about misuse. Guns are illegal in Chicago but it is a shooting gallery but heroin is illegal as well and many die from that too.
