So if you haven't heard a bunch of new data centers for AI have been popping up across our country like crazy. they emit this extremely loud noise and also consume a lot of water and people are fed up with them. there's now a push against these data centers going up in peoples backyards. So in this meeting here in Kansas people are expressing their frustrations over these data centers and i guess these elected representatives don't like that people utterly despise them so this person clapping gets tossed out.

Think this is fair? first amendment hello?

Blah blah. Idc what people say, clapping after a speech isn’t a disruption. This is just these elected reps not liking that we hate these stupid data centers and suppressing peoples right to disagree.

Nothing happened to his First Amendment rights. Everyone present was given time to present comments and opinions. It’s a local government run meeting, and it’s subject to the rules and guidelines announced by the chair. She had put out no shouting, noise-making or clapping instructions at the onset - ffs let those speaking present their arguments without noisy interruptions. She gave several warnings and even said next one who was defiant would be taken out. And that’s exactly what happened. Rules are pointless without enforcement, and no one in the area has their panties in a wad over it. First Amendment doesn’t mean “I do whatever the hell I please, even if it’s disrespect to others, without consequences.” This isn’t even newsworthy here.

Yeah, I knew you would be against this. Look its one thing if the clapping was obnoxiously interrupting people speaking but it wasn’t. It was clearly after the person spoke.

And You can say this against decorum until you are blue in the face, if you can’t see what this truly is as a suppression of free speech because the reps there clearly can’t handle how unpopular these data centers are then you just aren’t seeing the forest for the trees here. This is them saying ‘oh you hate this huh? Well too bad deal with it.’

You’re also frankly misconstruing what this person actually did. Clapping after someone speaks isn’t ‘do whatever the hell i want without consequences.’ If he were he would be getting up and shouting during the other person’s speaking time. Its just expressing agreement with the speaker and disagreement with the reps.

So grabbing him and arresting him over this takes it way too far. Most people can see it for what this is. I don’t know why you can’t. 🤷

I’ve seen the entire town hall video, not the chopped and edited piece presented here. So have those affected here. Lesson here isn’t about free speech, it’s about why it’s a bad idea not to heed warnings.

Doesn’t matter if or why they hate data centers. If you chair a meeting and put out the ground rules, give warnings, then a final one, and someone figuratively gives you the middle finger and defies you, don’t expect a pass. Speech and actions have consequences. This is no different.

Speech can have consequences but it should never have ‘legal’ consequences. That should always remain protected under free speech.

If you don't want data centres then stop using AI. That picture you created used a ton of water and energy, it didn't appear for free. The UK is turning brown at the minute, fires are breaking out, we've drought restrictions so why are we pouring swimming pool fulls of water into these places just so we can see a video of a tortoise dancing?

As for free speech I don't like it. It encourages people to be disrespectful dickheads.

You should agree. If you just cut back a little instead of exercising it at every opportunity there'd be a lot less hate and shooting. Free speech solves little but to rile up the rift raft

no, we don't agree with you. being anti free speech is about as unamerican as you can get.

That said though there are still limits, any speech that is actionable that clearly leads to violence or unlawful activity such as 'lets go shoot up that school' is actually a crime.

But all in all the moment we give way on our first amendment rights is the day our democracy is abandoned. It's at a very fragile place right now but most people in our country still care about this very fundamental right we share. So kicking people out of a public assembly for exercising their free speech should be a crime in itself. those elected representatives are there to serve us not the other way around.

Private businesses or venues on the other hand can instead kick you out if the deem necessary. there should just be no 'legal' consequences.

There were other incidents such as a person being arrested after speaking over the limit by a few seconds. It wasn’t even like a, “I will stay up here as long as I feel like!” or a Filibuster or whatever. They were merely finishing their sentence and stopped a little over the limit, but didn’t continue or cause a disturbance.

The system clamps down on average people, meanwhile giving amnesty and corporate welfare to business tycoons who pollute our airs and waterways, scam consumers through unfair practices, and do unethical immoral questionable labor onto their workforce. Just sayin’.
