Do hardships create success, or do they just reveal existing talent?

I've heard of this before. Someone claiming they grew up very poor with the same meals, someone claiming their parents were very harsh (authoritarian, old-school type) on them... saying that thanks to that they're now a great, successful person with their high paying professions, a family or even a famous celebrity.

Should all the credits be given to the hardships and poor treatment or does the person actually still had skills and talents despite everything they underwent?

What if the person had no special talent at all, limited social skills, no abilities to manage money, no nothing. Then no amount of hardships nor even severe punishment from their parents would create successful people. Just the hardships alone isn't going to teach you how to run your own business nor how to be a great doctor or soccer player.

I know of someone that always had poor social skills and doesn't have the ability to create a business nor get high grades enough to be in the medicine field. Even with hardships he's still just an average person working on a cafeteria as a dish washer. No amount of harsh treatment would've made him into a wealthy, professional.
