I don’t even go on Facebook, plus I never cared about Bill Maher’s opinion on anything much less the direction our politics should go in.

Personally I want our politicians to stand on a campaign founded on constituents’ best interests, a consistent message that stems for years with actual results to back it up, along with a platform that anyone can subscribe to even when it is from The Left flank.

Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris stood for nothing and allowed Donald Trump to get away with victory. If Democratic Establishment keeps getting in the way, then we won’t be winning elections or pushing back when Republicans dig into our freedoms, rights, and our values all for corporations without a conscience or a heart who throw money at making things worse if it means boosting their revenue.

Housing for all, Medicare for all is the foundation of these candidates running which is already miles ahead of The Democratic Establishment since they are beating actual Establishment losers. In NYC three incumbents were defeated in primaries due to Zohran Mamdani’s endorsements, two were associated with DSA. This movement isn’t just in NYC, but all over this country. Young people and people in general are fed up with a failed system, they are getting involved to help shape the future of this nation for the benefit of themselves, neighbors, friends, etc.

If Bill Maher wanted an open ended discussion he’d have on DSA members like top members. Instead it is all noise to distract and keep every voter from voting for their best interests.

The GOP are afraid and frightened too, because a more unified and capable Democratic Party that actually upholds Democratic Values and helps put money into people’s pockets will surely lose. If “Socialist Democrats” are what lose general elections, why would they be against it. Wouldn’t they be in favor? A weaker party is better for their agenda needs to be met. It is a stronger movement and it has momentum.

The far left is as crazy as the far right, just on opposite spectrums. What's happened in the USA starting 50 years ago with Reagan, but most noticeably in the last 25, is that the GOP has moved so far RIGHT wing being centric is portrayed as radical to them, while anything even slightly further left is attacked as being communist, socialist, Marxist, anti-American, blah, blah, bullshit.

That is by design. It allows authoritarianism to seep in under the guise of protecting freedom for all, when in fact, it's exactly the opposite. For example, all the rights and privileges women fought decades for in the USA are trying to be erased by pushing the lie that the USA is and has been a Christian nation, and the head of the Christian household is the man, and voting should be done as a family vote, not as individuals. And other assorted crap like that. Same BS as the 1800's, different angle.

Most of the DSA proposals are never going to happen in the USA under the current system, but that doesn't mean they're all bad proposals. Many are good proposals that just won't happen either unless out of control capitalism and an entirely different attitude towards citizenry takes place.

As for Bill Maher, he's mostly a sell-out nowadays and has been ever since his meeting with Trump, although he was headed that way even before. When I say him failing to take Bill Barr to task and kiss his ass after the first Trump fiasco, I knew he was worthless going forward. "New Rules" are still good sometimes, despite his traitor-like behavior.

@loveslongnails I don’t think the issue is whether some individual DSA proposals poll well. Many political movements contain popular ideas. The real question is whether empowering that movement also empowers its broader agenda.

The DSA’s published program does not stop at expanding healthcare or labor protections. It also calls for moving beyond capitalism and restructuring major constitutional institutions, including abolishing the Senate and replacing the presidency and Supreme Court with institutions subordinate to Congress.

If voters could simply cherry-pick a few popular DSA proposals while ignoring everything else, prominent Democrats such as James Carville and Bill Maher would not be warning that the DSA’s growing influence could drive them to leave the party or vote Republican. Their concern is not merely Medicare for All or another isolated policy. It is that electing DSA-aligned candidates strengthens an organized movement whose goals extend far beyond ordinary liberal reform.

So I don’t view this as “calling everything left of center communism.” I’m responding to what the DSA itself says it wants to accomplish. Someone may personally support only a handful of its policies, but political power is not distributed à la carte. Electing DSA-backed candidates gives the broader movement more legitimacy, money, influence, and institutional power.

Whether Bill Maher is right or wrong about Trump is a separate debate. The relevant question is whether his description of the DSA’s agenda is accurate. If it is, then voters should read the platform and decide whether they want to strengthen the movement behind it.

This is basically an irrelevant discussion because I do NOT have to support every point in ANYONE's agenda, nor would I. Yes, major institutions SHOULD be restructured. Period. I don't have to agree with their suggestions of which ones to change. Nor do I agree with the idea that Dem voters will flee the party and support the GOP to any significant degree, and that's even funnier coming from James " I go with the wind" Carville and Maher.

If anything, the current institution doesn't serve anyone well except billionaires and monied interests. That's a fact, but if you want to pretend that changing the format of the how that power is delivered without changing who has the POWER, go ahead. This is actually where the DSA movement mistakenly thinks they'll make a huge difference.

I see the problem I have with here when discussing topics like these: it's the whole idea of "liberal reform". I can sum it up as such; it doesn't matter what the "shape" of the cage looks like. If the keeper feeding you is corrupt, immoral, and interested only in profiting from you and controlling you, then you're going to continue to be poisoned.

Nothing is going to change unless the hearts of the men holding the power change first, and actively facilitate change among the uneducated by educating them. And with that, I'm speaking mainly to US wealth right now, not the global situation.

Liberal reform, like desegregation, will never change the hearts and minds of stupid people, but it would make the US more livable for those who are not.

Maher has been a liberal Democrat for decades, yet he recently argued that when people call the DSA “communists,” they’re identifying a real ideological tradition rather than inventing a label. He also warned that if Democrats continue moving toward the DSA, he could support a Republican like J. D. Vance instead.

You don’t have to agree with Maher, but I think it’s worth engaging with why someone who has spent most of his career criticizing Republicans is now warning Democrats about the DSA, rather than simply dismissing him out of hand.

@goaded That is a false comparison. Republicans are not campaigning to deport 100 million people, nor is there anything close to 100 million undocumented immigrants in the country. Enforcing immigration law against people who entered or remain unlawfully is not equivalent to abolishing the Senate, replacing the presidency and Supreme Court, or reconstructing the constitutional system.

And Republicans holding elected offices does not answer the point. The question is whether people should help spread awareness of the DSA’s own published agenda before that movement gains greater power.

I claimed lies because the statements were at odds with the information I had at the time, which I had no reason to doubt. With more information, I change my positions. It's not hard to understand. (And, for the record, I only claimed Maher was lying.)

The US Senate is extremely undemocratic. Democratic senators represented 204 million Americans in 2023, compared to 150 million represented by Republicans, and the split was only 51-49, practically equal.

I would suggest you to watch the video I provided. AI, heavily sources it's information from open source platforms like Wikipedia. In the interview, you will hear examples of the platform from being used as a propaganda tool. The Senate has been divided to give more strength to less populated states. This is why the discrepancy exists.
