They don't know what it is. It's a scare word that's been drilled into them since they were kids in school. They equate it with communism, something else they don't understand, which is a socio-economic system that has NEVER existed on this planet except in name only, no matter what anyone tells you.

The people of the USA are so brainwashed into a capitalist idea that they'd rather suffer when capitalism is out of control than try and embrace any form of socialism.

What makes it even funnier is that those people living paycheck to paycheck and not making it in the capitalist world of the USA, are actually surviving on a variation of socialism; they just don't know it. LOL

We've been preconditioned to have negative views of it. But when my history teacher did an experiment once asking what policies we want, the majority of the class ended up picking a Socialist Government run by Hitler🤣 The teacher was like, "You guys know Socialism is BAD, right?" But that's what we wanted.

I recently watched a documentary on the Soviet Union. I've been lied to my whole life. Incredible system. My parents are from the Iron Curtain. My mom always says, "Around was a fence, inside was freedom." And she understands why so many young people are opening their eyes and starting to support Socislism. They gave the people EVERYTHING and actually cared about them. The US is behind the rest of the world

I think, with the exception of the American right wing, which seems not to understand anything, people are beginning to conclude that socialism is preferable to predatory capitalism, which is what we have now. In the economic situation which we have now as a result of capitalism, it is not surprising that this is occurring. A mixture of socialism and well-controlled capitalism would probably be a good idea. The problem is that capitalism cannot be controlled easily at all. It tends to put too much money into the hands of just a few individuals, and those few individuals soon realize that they can literally buy important parts of the political and social systems and get anything and everything they want, even more so. This is what's happened now, and you see the results.

I think Americans are still ardent Capitalists. But i do think most Americans wouldn't mind a touch of Socialism where the free market fails us. Such as Healthcare, student loans, predatory loans for housing, or the housing market in general. It's not that we need Socialism so much as we need legislatures that work for the people again, not big business. Not EVERYTHING in this country needs to be for profit. The free market should not be regulated except for where it's proven unable or unwilling to regulate itself. That's where gov't comes in.

Most of us don't think about it much. Many of us admire the social democracies of Europe with their strong social safety net, medical care for all, low homicide rates, longer life expectancy, lower infant mortality, free or low cost universities.
