They have convinced themselves of their moral superiority. So disagreeing with them isn’t just a difference of opinion, it’s inherently dangerous and the only way to eliminate the danger is through force. There are plenty of people on the right who are the same way.
To be fair, ALL government is authoritarian. Authoritarianism is a scale with anarchy at one end and totalitarianism at the other. Fascism is actually closer to the middle than many people realize. The “consent of the governed” is the prevailing factor on the anarchy side and the strength of the government is the prevailing factor on the totalitarian side.
