Why is assault on a police officer a felony when simple assault isn’t?

So if you put hands on someone, not injuring them but still contact.. that’s simple assault. Now if you do the same to a cop, it’s a felony. Why the difference? All lives matter, a cops life shouldn’t matter more than the average taxpayer.

Could just be ideas from conservatives.
