Why do people think mid to southwestern Virginians have thick accents?

I live in the Appalachian / piedmont region of Virginia.

I don't call them thick, but that region has a distinctive accent. My father was raised there and most of my cousins are still there. It's quite different from the mid-Atlantic accent that is used by TV reporters and other broadcast personalities.
