With little exception, the US government does NOT dictate prices of ANYTHING. Furthermore, in any given year, the US exports more oil than it imports. We really do not rely on imported oil at all, and we never have. The sole purpose of importing and exporting petroleum is PROFIT. It is occasionally profitable to sell our domestic petroleum overseas and it is often profitable to buy cheaper petroleum from overseas. It is also a part of maintaining economic and political alliances.
The real and ONLY reason that petroleum changes prices in the US is because the entire industry operates on supply side economics. A few companies control the majority of the market so they can artificially inflate prices any time they please, with no real reason other than to make more money. The consumer base can’t do anything about it because it’s a necessity, not a luxury, and those who control the market know that. They don’t even make excuses for rising prices anymore. They haven’t since the Bush administration. The useful idiots among us do that for them.

Speculators in the stock market are keeping it high. Why is the price of oil $70-$80 a barrel (which isn’t that high) but gas prices are still high? Gasoline is a commodity on the stock market. You want to blame someone for high gas prices, blame the stock market. Have you ever noticed that when a hurricane would hit the gulf states and the gas refineries were affected by the storm, before the storm passed gas prices across the country would go up at the pump? Same gas that was $3.50 in the morning could be $3.75 in the afternoon. That’s stock market assholes capitalizing on a disaster.


Now let’s not forget that Obama had $5+ gas prices and Biden had $4+ gas prices and they were not fighting Iran…. They were giving Iran billions of tax payer $$ to “please play nice”.

The US has had multiple refineries shut down because of environmental regulations, and we haven't opened a new one in forever.

We Americans are spoiled with the price of gasoline. Many other countries are paying the equivalent of $10 per gallon, and Americans complain that the price went up to $4 a gallon.

The price of gasoline in the US is based more on politics than supply. Remember that a significant part of each gallon of gasoline is tax... federal tax and state tax.

But fuel prices are not high because of just the straits. Trump destruction of the fuel reserves, oil logistics, dollar and economy are all compounding making it harder to produce and get fuel.

US oil reserves are at the lowest levels in over 40 years and releasing oil has kept prices more or less in check. It can't go much lower because demand will be high to replenish the reserves and every country will have to replenish their reserves.

Oil companies and, more importantly, insurance companies have absolutely no confidence that anybody is going to refrain from attacking oil tankers in the whole area surrounding Iran and Saudi Arabia. As a result of that, no crude oil is moving.

From what I understand, it's because gas prices are determined by predictions in worldwide supply. Iran as an oil supplier is pretty much done now so gas is still expensive as a result of their supply being off the market.

I think it's stupid that it's based on worldwide supply if we are trying to be an energy independent nation. It should be based on the supply we have.

The USA is a net exporter of Oil. the price you pay at the pump is the result of GOUGING by oil companies, which is already illegal in the USA. The Governors just never enforce the laws already on the books.

Oil is at pre-war levels. The oil companies aren't price gouging. The problem is increasing regulations in several states that have caused refineries to close and thus having to import refined products at higher prices to meet the demand that those refineries used to meet.

@MrOracle I live in Louisiana, and we're a net exporter of oil, by far, and the price of Gasoline is around 90 cents higher than it was before the war started, and we refine our own oil here.

Trust me, it's price gouging. Several years back, congress stopped it one time, but this time they've done nothing about it.

Just because you refine oil in Louisiana doesn't mean that Louisiana is the only market your refineries serve. When refineries in California or Washington get shut down, it increases national demand for refined products. When demand is higher than supply, prices go up. Louisiana doesn't get a special off-market discount just because the oil is pumped and refined locally (or, maybe a very small one).

Oil companies set REGIONAL prices based on their costs, which includes distribution (and distribution limitations, such as pipeline capacity and scheduling).

Right now, we are having to import about 15% more refined products than 2 years ago, and that affects nationwide prices.

Remember a year or two ago when we had an egg shortage and egg prices were sky high? They were still sky high in the states that produced most of the country's eggs, because it's a national market. But the market has recovered to the point that we are now exporting surplus eggs, and egg prices are way down from the shortage era. That's how mature markets work.
