US oil reserves are at the lowest levels in over 40 years and releasing oil has kept prices more or less in check. It can't go much lower because demand will be high to replenish the reserves and every country will have to replenish their reserves.
Trump doesn't know the meaning of "truth". Hence why he never uses it.
But fuel prices are not high because of just the straits. Trump destruction of the fuel reserves, oil logistics, dollar and economy are all compounding making it harder to produce and get fuel.
Most fuel oil actually comes from Russia, not Iran.
Oil companies and, more importantly, insurance companies have absolutely no confidence that anybody is going to refrain from attacking oil tankers in the whole area surrounding Iran and Saudi Arabia. As a result of that, no crude oil is moving.
Trump is a lying motherfucker, we are not in control of the Strait of Hormuz. The American public has been getting bullshitted by the Trump motherfucker. He does not know what to do about this war, Iran is a hell of a lot stronger than he thought. He is like Johnson with the North Vietnamese.
The Strait has been closed by the US and tankers are being escorted through the strait but many are afraid thay may be taken out by an Iranian drone.
It turns out that you need both parties to facilitate traffic through the straits at the same time.
