Is adult friendship harder because we’re more guarded and selective?

I believe one reason the majority have difficulty making close friends as an adult is that adults are more biased than children because adults have been hurt and betrayed before and they need more evidence that others are honourable and worthy of trust before they will give you a chance to be their friend, and most candidates for friendship just do not care enough to earn your friendship, being busy and disinterested themselves.

I remember as a teenager I was a little chubby at 120 pounds and 5"3 and an older lady would always tell me that people do not have time to get to know me and learn I am a friendly and sweet person and if I want them to make time to get to know me, I will have to lose weight and improve my looks so that others will think I am worth investing their friendship time in, so even while I was a teenager, people in my circle had already commercialized and negotiated friendship as if it were a business deal or marketing agency and not as an organic function that naturally happens between compassionate and friendly beings.
