Bessent announced last week that the Treasury would be buying up bonds from Sept 9 to Nov 4 (day after midterms) to try to bring interest rates down. The only way to raise the money to do that is through taxes or print money. They needed quick money to prop up bonds before the midterms so raise taxes via tariffs was the quickest route.

The real stupidity would be if Trump doesn't chicken out. Canada could come up with its own October Surprise and really screw Trump and the Republicans with retaliatory tariffs or export tariffs on oil and electricity. I would expect a response like that because Canada would prefer a lame duck Trump. Checkmate.
