What should happen to Lindsey Clancy?

This is the woman on trial for murdering her three children by strangling. At the time I am writing this, the jury is out making the decision. The choices are life in prison or a long time in a mental hospital. There is also another choice, which is that she could be found guilty just of manslaughter, which would probably result in her being kept in prison for a shorter period of time. There are no other alternatives at this point. Given what you know about this case, or maybe what you don't know, which alternative seems appropriate?

A long time in the mental hospital.

Locked up for the next 40-50 years in a mental facility or jail. She shouldn't be released into soceity again like liberals are pushing for with the inevitable multi million dollar book deal and tour of the talk show circuit.

All the women supporting her have thought about killing their kids too. So, by giving Lindsay the boot, I have no doubt we're saving lives.

The nearly complete lack of understanding regarding the existence and nature of postpartum psychosis worries me a great deal.

It's evil, man. I don't know if you're religious, but I firmly believe that there's a reason Eve is the one who gets tempted by the serpent.

Lindsay knew exactly what she was doing. We call it mental illness now, but I don't know what else to call that besides a demon. There wasn't any medication in the world that could have stopped that. The mental health system didn't fail. Lindsay wanted mental health care on her terms.

You can call it a demon if you wish, but that woman had postpartum psychosis, and if you had some understanding of modern medicine, you would know exactly what I'm talking about. Attributing this tragedy to a demon is just primitive and inaccurate. There are no demons, there's just us.

I don't know what impact her condition is having on her now. Although my thought is that she's probably receiving other psychotropic drugs at this time, whether or not they are effective is hard to tell. I think that a few years in a psychiatric hospital would be sufficient to decide, first of all, whether or not treatment has been effective and, second of all, whether or not she continues to be a danger to others. Going forward, I would not want to leave her around children, but other than that, she probably would not be a danger to anybody.

Throwing her in prison may have a somewhat salutary effect on your and others' need for vengeance, but all it will do is harm her. Harming her is not the correct response to this problem. She has already inflicted terrible harm on herself that she will never fully recover from. That should be sufficient for you.

She tried to commit suicide after killing her children. That makes me think maybe she was aware what she did was wrong and tried to kill herself in an attempt to avoid prison time.

It was also reported that she googled “Can you treat a sociopath?”
It seems to me like she was aware what she did was wrong. Sociopaths just don’t care about the feelings of others but they aren’t delusional. Sociopaths do know the difference between morally right and morally wrong. They just lack the ability to feel sympathy.
