It's a trick question because true assault weapons are capable of fully automatic fire.

"Assault weapon" was already a defined term that described a military weapon capable of continuing to firing as long as you keep the trigger depressed or run out of ammo.
Those weapons are already highly regulated.

The dishonest "gun control" lobbyists invented the term "military 'style' assault weapon" to describe a semiautomatic rifle that looked military. The goal was to confuse the public. Later, that term was conveniently abbreviated to ""assault weapon", which is a misnomer.
Assault weapon sounds scary.

Semiautomatic firearms all operate the same - one shot per trigger pull.

They focus on the AR-15 design because it is the most popular. It can be accessorized with various ergonomic, composite stocks, barrel shrouds, etc. And when that is done, they look scary to people who know nothing. Gun control propagandists convince people that, if it looks like a machine gun, it must be a machine gun.

The AR-15 is the most popular sporting platform used by hunters. Saying that its only purpose is to kill people is like saying that every gun's sole purpose is to kill people.

The reason for trying to ban certain semiautomatics is to set a precedence for overriding the 2nd Amendment in order to ban more and more types of guns.

The gun control lobby has one mission - to ban citizen ownership of guns. It has nothing to do with saving lives.

Total gun homicides in 2025: ~12,850 deaths (provisional CDC figure, representing a 16% decrease from 2024).
Long guns, including rifles and shotguns, are used in a much smaller percentage of total firearm homicides annually (historically around 2% to 4% combined). 257 to 514 deaths in 2025. And so-called "assault weapons" are a subset of that.

Americans own an estimated 20 million to 24 million AR-15 style and modern sporting rifles, which are commonly classified under the broad definition of assault weapons.
Wow, with that number of weapons of mass destruction they have killed a remarkably small number of people.

Keep in mind that the FBI says that 80% of firearm homicides are gang related. So 51 to 103 'long gun related deaths and far fewer "assault weapon" deaths were not gang related?

Would gun bans prevent gangs from acquiring guns and shooting people?

It should be clear by now that I reject the term "assault weapon" and am strongly opposed to banning semiautomatic firearms that liars refer to as assault weapons.
I support the Second Amendment, although I am okay with regulating machine guns, rockets, artillery and explosive devices because those are capable of killing indiscriminately.

Firearm deaths are not a huge problem in the U. S. To put the number in perspective if 12,850 sounds like a lot, consider the fact that there are 40,000 deaths from accidental falls, 40,000 accidental poisoning deaths, 40,000 vehicular deaths, 250,000 deaths from preventable hospital error, and who knows how many deaths from pharmaceuticals and vaccines.
