The country was at Civil War for years before the US was even there.
You also realize the USSR overthrew the government in 1979? 🤷‍♂️

I would highly suggest you to study the history of the territory. It's been a crossroads of Empires for centuries. It's been conquered many times over, and this is why there are significant cultural and language differences in the region. It's seen numerous civil wars just over the past few centuries. It's seen meddling from many world powers.

The issues on Afghanistan were there well before the US was involved.
It's those issues that made developing a stable government nearly impossible.
The Afghan government was relatively democratic in comparison, but horribly partisan and corrupt. Even the US threatened to pull funding in 2018 due to it.
The ANDSF was horribly corrupt and inept. Just Ken could likely tell you how incompetent they were, since he was a vet there.
Once the US pulled support, it crumbled without much of a fight.

These were US created issues, but problems in the territory from the beginning.
The US can be blamed for exacerbating the issue by throwing money into a government that was a financial black hole.
Afghanistan will likely fall back onto a civil war again 🤷‍♂️ or at best a hermit kingdom with no international connections.

The US played a huge role in Afghanistan’s history, especially during the Soviet-Afghan War. The US supported and armed Afghan mujahideen groups through Pakistan to fight the Soviets. After the Soviets left, Afghanistan was left devastated and different armed groups started fighting each other.

Out of this chaos, the Taliban eventually rose to power in the 1990s. The Taliban and Al-Qaeda were not the same organization, but they became closely connected. Al-Qaeda, led by Osama bin Laden, was given a safe haven in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, and bin Laden used the country as a base for his organization.

After 9/11, the US invaded Afghanistan in 2001, mainly because the Taliban refused to hand over bin Laden and because Al-Qaeda was operating from Afghanistan. The US eventually overthrew the Taliban government, but after 20 years of war, the Taliban came back to power when American forces withdrew in 2021.

So I wouldn’t say that the US simply “created” Al-Qaeda or the Taliban. It’s more complicated than that. But US involvement in the region, especially its support for Islamist fighters during the Soviet war, was one of the factors that helped shape the environment in which these groups later became powerful.

And today, the Taliban are directly responsible for the restrictions they impose on people, especially women. The situation is the result of decades of war, foreign intervention, local power struggles, and extremist movements, not just one country or one event.

I agree that Afghanistan’s problems existed long before the US got involved. Its history is extremely complicated, and you can’t realistically explain everything through American intervention alone.

My point isn’t that the US created all of Afghanistan’s problems. It’s that US intervention also became an important part of the chain of events that shaped the situation today. The support given to the mujahideen during the Soviet war, the power vacuum after the Soviet withdrawal, and later the 20-year US occupation all had major consequences.

I also agree that the Afghan government was extremely corrupt and that the ANDSF had serious problems with corruption, leadership and morale. That’s a big reason why the government and military collapsed so quickly after US support was withdrawn.

So I think we’re actually closer in our views than it might seem. Afghanistan had deep-rooted problems long before the US arrived, but foreign intervention, including American intervention, often made those problems more complicated rather than solving them. Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the US and various Afghan factions all played different roles at different times.

Afghanistan is basically a case where decades of internal problems and foreign interference kept feeding into each other.

The big mistake the US made, was assuming a democratic model would work. It crested a situation where it only could stand if the US was in control of everything. It just wasn't feasible.
