Their yeshivas receive hundreds of millions in public funding every year, yet basic subjects like English, math and science are often barely taught. Some students have even scored close to zero on state tests.

Then there’s the political influence. They vote as a bloc, which gives them a lot of leverage, and politicians seem pretty reluctant to challenge them or cut funding.

At what point does protecting religious freedom stop being an excuse for schools receiving taxpayer money to avoid basic accountability?

that supreme court case you dropped is totally real but it completely misses the point that whole kiryas joel case was just about whether the state can carve out a special public school district for a specific religious group not about whether yeshivas get public money

It doesn't miss the point and I remember this case well from when it was in the news in the late 1980s. This is why I used it so quickly in counterpointing what you are suggesting.

Since school districts receive money from states, the state carving out a special school district based on a specific religious culture is tantamount to a violation of the Establishment Clause in the First Amendment and, second, is the state giving money to yeshivas... the schools in that district. That's what you were bitching about.

I will say this though in defense of what you are saying... Any school district or other group - whether a tightly knit ethnic group like Hasidic Jews or not - that is receiving funding (that is constitutional) still needs to explain how they are spending that. That's what the GAO (Government Accounting Office) is for - as a watchdog for funding. States have similar offices. In New York, that's the Office of the State Comptroller (OSC). Specifically, the Division of State Government Accountability and the Department of Audit and Control which are part of the Comptroller's Office, are the state's watchdogs. They should have any public data that concerns you.

Nobody who is rich lives on single income, their income is borrowed from the employees and trades people that help them become rich, all high income people live on borrowed income, they hired others to deliver their product, to make their product, to design their product, to trade their product. The only ones that do not live on borrowed income are the ones who make minimum wage at factory jobs or the ones who fish directly from the oceans or the ones who do direct manual labour on farms. Hasidic Jews fall into the same category as the Amish or radical Muslims for me. Religious freaks who take their beliefs too far and therefore live on the fringe of society. They dress to set themselves apart, they stayed walled off from the rest of society in little religious enclaves, and then they complain that other people don't accept them. Personally? I say fuck them all. I don't have time for their religious obsession or their stupid clothing and foods and whining. Same argument as immigrants... assimilate or you're irrelevant. Luckily all these groups tend to be small and inconsequential.

What I think is that the super rich in New York happily take 4.4 billion in tax payer subsidies... If you add in federal more like 10 to12 billion. like 500 million for semiconductor mega deals, or 700 million dollars for film and television tax credits. That is way way more of problem than some religious group that gets money. 500 mil a year overall goes to non public religious and independent schools. Not just Jewish private education. Jewish schools have grown Catholic has to contracted. Means more goes to the one less to the other. It's a common distraction ploy. You can't me excited about it.
