All nations have restrictions on immigration and always have. The U. S. had its highest immigrations, in the millions, around the turn of the 20th century. There is no comparison to those numbers at any other time in the 20th or 21st century.

The only reason countries clamp down harder on illegal emigres is because citizens THINK these folk are taking their jobs, which is generally wrong except in a few cases such as construction, service industries or field workers. They also believe immigrants are taking their benefits.

There are a minority of sick children of illegal immigrants who qualify for medical treatment because they are in this country. But this is a minority of a minority of a minority.

The reasons for restrictions have always been the costs of supporting new people with needs and no resources. This has remained the same since time immemorial.

@shish_kebab Didn't say that at all. Said SOME employers check for illegal status. Some do not. In service industries there are a lot of under the table workers who are illegals. Never said they're not working. Said there're some jobs they can't get because of employers checking/ not employing illegals.

What I'd like to see is fast tracking people who've been in the pipeline for legal status for years. Then we can address the status of those who've been here and need help getting legal status, who are not, nor have been criminals and who have been working in this country for years and contributing to it via paying taxes. .

People apply for asylum, hardship, etc. But illegal entry happens by plane, with expired work and student visas. and through the use of coyotes. That can only be stemmed by more border patrols, personnel and by keeping track of these expired work and student visas. I don't think Trump, Biden or anyone is on top of all this perople-paperwork and it's almost impossible to do so w limited resources. which is why people continually keep coming. They know they can fall through the cracks.

They've been catching people recently is through those people showing up for court cases on their status and then deporting them instead of allowing their cases to proceed. Or relying on people reporting someone's illegal status.

The issue with this action, as NPR's reporter said, is that it was waving a flag saying come on in. This was done to fast track work permits for these people. However, it was not a permanent situation. It was an extension of a situation for those already here whose work permits wer expring. The RULING was done overnight or early in the morning... No one was "flown in."
