At the minute we're that passenger messing with the plane door ignoring the so called experts. Soon we'll be plummeting to the ground but too busy going "oooh there's a birdie" to even notice.

It was mainly the CEOs of Anthropic and OpenAI who gave that impression, but there are indeed several researchers and others who are concerned about this risk.

But as for the heads of OpenAI and Anthropic, I think it’s because they want to restrict and ban open-source AI – which are AI models favoured by the Chinese – so they’re trying to slow China down.

It is a good argument. Who do I sue if open source AI crashes my car? It is clear if it is Tesla.

To claim AI will kill us all by the end of the decade requires some massive failure like setting off nuclear missiles. It is hard to imagine other catastrophic scenarios. If Tesla cars start deliberately crashing you ground the Tesla fleet.

Nobody has any idea what the odds are whatsoever. Chance of species-extinction meteor strike... maybe 1 in 100 million. Chance of AI driven species extinction 🤷‍♀️So people just make shit up.

Because fear sells better than good news. Also I think the devs want to be able to claim they are being held back by safety concerns, but really they are just not delivering as fast as the money thinks they should.
