What does it feel like to jump off of a cliff into water?

I've never jump into water from the height of more than two feet, but people say it hurts to jump into water from very high up. What kind of sensation/pain is it?

How about those guys that climp the really high ladder to jump off of a tiny diving board into a little kiddie pool. I forgot what those are called, but how come they never get hurt especially since the water is so shallow?

It doesn't hurt unless you belly flop or land on your back. Just make sure where every are jumping is deep enough. I've done a 50 ft bridge a number of times. It's just and a jump with a few second adrenaline rush then into the water and bubble all around you as you plunge deeper. Then you slow down and swim to the surface. =) Try it a swimming pool with a diving board if you want to do it in a safe place. Jumping off a bridge over barbed wire in an inlet is not the safest thing in the world, but whatever I survived. =P

As far as how a belly flop or back flop feels. It's like getting smacked really hard over the entire surface that collides with the water. If you go feet first or head first with your arms out to dive then you minimize surface area and basically cut right through the water.

Just to quell your fears the Olympic high dive platform is 30 feet. They dive that height all day long with no issues. I see the hiu bellow me talking about breaking bones and stuff, sure if you jump of the Cliffs of Moher you're going to die they are like 700 feet. But if you are in the range of 30-70 it should not be an issue. Some guy managed to dive Niagara Falls at 125 feet I think and come out of it without any significant injury. Everything in moderation.

@update: I'm sure that hurts. =P They are dare devils. They are using their surface area to spread out the impact. They usualy dive into blow up pools as well which are like an air bag and dive from about 30 feet. That's crazy in my opinion and I'm sure it hurts, but they are tough guys. =D

Got me looking at crazy high dives now. =P This guys crazy 172 feet link you can see teh guys that do very high dives land feet first, and in this case he tapes his knees because of the impact. These are the heights we're people start to really get hurt.

It's like jumping on to concrete, except it yields. It hurts the soles of your feet, your legs, and your bones, and you feel the impact all over your body.

From a high enough cliff, and if you don't dive correctly, yes you can break your legs.

Those guys are trained. You couldn't put a first timer up there and expect him to do something like that without injury.

People don't start by doing the high dives. They start low, learn how to dive, then start going from higher and higher.

point your toes (or be good at diving...) and it's not so bad. I guess I haven't done that in a while, so I can't remember exactly.. it might feel a little weird, but not painful unless you belly flop or let another surface of your body hit the water straight on.

It's a lot of fun though. I jumped off a 70 ft cliff. it was as bad as I thought it would be.
