What do you wear to orientation at a factory job?

Do I dress like it's an interview or regular clothes. I was told that for work you have to wear jeans and sneakers.

If all else fails (or if you just feel like being lazy) you can do what I did for my public safety dispatch orientation.

You want to look pulled-together and professional, right?

But you don't want to over or underdress, right?

So go with jeans and a plain shirt with buttons and solid color tennis shoes.

Go dark on the jeans, this looks more professional. Don't wear jeans that are really dark but with super washed-out areas. That may be stylish, but to employers outside the style industry, it looks crappy.

An inexpensive shirt in a solid color is a good idea for the orientation with the field you're looking into. You can go with a button-down shirt or the polo kind that have just a few buttons at the neck. Bonus points if you find out what color shirts the employees have and wear something close to that.

I would recommend black shoes, but here you should be more concerned about appearing ready for the job than looking wonderful. So, make sure that whatever shoes you wear, they are at the very least, completely appropriate for being on your feet a lot.

You want your future employer to be able to see you as an employee already - whether you just got the job or this is pre-employment orientation. As long as you DON'T look sloppy and you DO look ready to work, you should be fine.

I would wear what they told you to wear just in case you have to do some of the work you're going to be doing.

Like I was told when I did an interview for a factory job:

"dress casual but still presentable"

As in...yes, jeans and sneakers are fine, just make sure your clothes aren't ripped, and are clean.

You WOULD think to go in fully business attire, but you'd be out of place there.

Go there the day before the orientation and see what the other workers are wearing. Or go online to find out if you can get an idea what the dress code is. You could contact the HR to ask them what would be best to wear.

Do I need steel toed shoes? Is there something chemical that might react to denim jeans? Some places have specific rules like no cotton.

Wear the same thing to orientation as you would to work. It will show them you can follow instructions, and if the class includes a factory tour, you are dressed for it.

I would expect a new employee to show up for orientation in the clothing recomended for the workplace. In your case jeans and sneakers.

Call and ask. I'd imagine it would probably be best to just wear their dress code for work. You should be fine with that since they already are.
