"Norway's female volleyball team have said they will not wear bikini bottoms during the Olympic Games this summer.
Players swapped the traditional bikini bottoms for shorts during a match against Spain at the European Beach Handball Championship in Varna, Bulgaria, yesterday (18 July).
And the Norwegian federation has stated that it is willing to pay a fine - potentially 50 euros per player - for their defiance of the rules.
Speaking to AFP, Norwegian Handball Federation president Kare Geir Lio said: "Of course we would pay any fine. We are all in the same boat."
"The most important thing is to have equipment that athletes are comfortable with."

It's quite telling that female athletes' teams are being fined for NOT wanting to wear overtly revealing outfits for a sports event.

Do we see male athletes wearing skimpy outfits EXCEPT for swimming? And some swimmers wear full body suits to cut drag and avoid having to body shave. So, talk about FULL coverage.

I'd love to see male volleyball players in thong-bikini, banana-hammocks during the Olympics! They'd be laughed at AND have bruised penises: not that I wouldn't be entertained watching them. I would.

But this is about that old saw: patriarchal sexism. A majority of men LOVE seeing barely clad women in whatever sports they can be barely clad IN.

The bikini is a female thing, though in Europe, as many men don them. You don't see much of this in America: home of the staid. But all you have to do is look through Sports Illustrated. Where are the MEN in the swimsuit issue? (Maybe they've started featuring them, but I haven't heard about it.)

Why not put a sexy guy on the cover for us women to drool over. Well, it's a straight guy's magazine, for the most part, about sports men are interested in, with women athletes in sexy togs tossed in like bacon sprinkled over a salad. For spice.

And check out the cuts of women's athletic gear: regular ones AND running shorts. They're high and tight. There are a few models of men's gear cut like that for longer distrance runners: 10K and marathons. What about Daisy Dukes: that short, short made to e expose the lower curve of women's butt cheeks. The hangout was the point.

So do men wear parallel outfits? Maybe in the gay world, sometimes. But it's considered outrageous for men to show their bodies for women and other men to ogle. But, as always, women remain sexual OBJECTS. Men escape this, for the most part.

I find it hilarious that a transgender woman is on the cover of "Sports Illustrated" before a male athlete in a bikini is! A male, taking hormones to look like a female! The oddest form of male privilege I've ever heard of, and yet the most convoluted refusal to place males who LOOK like males as the same sexual objects women have been for ages and remain.

If the swimsuit issue featured BOTH sexes, equally unclsd, as models for the hottest summer gear, ESPECIALLY in an Olympic year, I'd have no beef with the whole idea. But this parading women's asses and taints before the WORLD on PURPOSE for cheap thrills. Sigh. We've not come as far as we all thought, have we?

Sex sells. Half the world probably wouldn't watch women's volleyball if the participants didn't wear bikinis.

So let's say we change the rules. Women can wear shorts now. Great.
Attendance / Viewership plummets.
Advertisers pull commercials from volleyball and invest in other summer games.
Advertising revenue drops, much like housing, and lowers revenues in other related games.

Men still have to wear spandex penis pants in most other summer games, but since it's men that can't possibly be sexist I guess?

I actually agree that the volleyball "uniform" is distasteful and shouldn't be mandatory, but then that starts a whole new problem...

Now that bikinis are non-mandatory, some girls still choose to wear them, and they are getting more attention than girls who don't (media, etc). Now the girls who chose to wear shorts are harassing the girls who choose to wear skimpier outfits.. It turns into middle school all over again, slut shaming, etc.

Honestly this makes absolutely no sense to me at all. In most sports, the prevailing governing body for that sport decides things like uniform design. There is no valid reason for requiring women to be nearly naked. Certain sports I could see some requirement in letting the judges see the body to judge form but Volley ball isn't about form. You score a point or you don't score a point. You don't get bonus points for scoring a point beautifully. To me, a more practical team uniform design would be something similar to what tennis players wear since the movements are similar.

Statistically speaking women sports draw far less fans and far less profit than male sports. It's reality. Beach volleyball which doesn't exactly require any actual talent, it's a sport teens can play well enough, is one of the least popular sports for both men and women.

I don't agree with the bikini outfit but to be blunt if they didn't wear anything of the like the sport would certainly not be in the Olympics and even fizzle out as a competition entirely. Without the visual sex appeal to men the financial profits in volleyball would plummet. Spectators that dominate volleyball are men and factually volleyball is not very popular to begin with. Market annalists know full well that sex sells and without seeing/showing hot fit thin women showing the most skin without seeing nipples, pubic hair (if they have any to be shown), anus and vulva men will not be interested. I don't think it is actually an issue of making women wear skimpy outfits. Some women might actually like wearing skimpy outfits. Other women may like to wear skimpy outfits sometimes and not at other times.

Again, these are issues of control.

Who gets to decide what women should wear? Who decides what is too little or too much skin? But the only people who can win back this control are women.

I can actually understand why they were fined. These are regulations which are set in advance. If you change the clothes you could potentially chance what kind of sponsorship deal you can get. This would be a disadvantage to your competitors.

If you want to change the dress discuss this in advance and give everyone the same choice.

However, if those are the rules and the rules have been accepted by the volleyball federation and Olympic Committee, then recourse would be to challenge and get the rule amended or overturned. The fine is the cost of wanting to participate under protest as they can equally choose not to participate at all. Those can and do change as players and fans express their views over time. And it's pretty common when rules are in place for a given year that if an individual or team violates those rules they pay a fine or face some other sanction.
