IMHO, Miss Biles disgraced what it means to be an Olympian, overcome all obstacles and do the best you can for your country and your team. Citing mental health as an excuse meaning she had lost her competitive edge and desire to be the best for her country and her team.
She's the GOAT who choked. Amazing athlete but I think she fucked up and will regret this for the rest of her life. I don't think it's "courageous" or "brave". This was a coward's move, but I honestly feel bad for her. All that being said I still very much respect her and her talent.
She literally pulled a LeBron James. He was getting worked over, so claimed injury and took off, abandoning his team. by the way, he also called himself the GOAT. Birds of a feather flock together I guess. Sure is strange she was fine with all the shit from her past all these years, but now suddenly, she can't handle it?
by the way, I fully support people looking after their mental health, I'm just not buying her story, and I'm not required to.
This is an experienced gymnast for whom the Olympics is everything, so I don’t think she would have stepped away unless she felt it were really necessary.
If she had retired prior to this Olympics, no one would have said she was anything other than a great gymnast. Her accomplishments speak for themselves.
@Jersey2 Though I agree Biles is something of an embarrassment try to research history before you come across as an idiot.
Kerri Strug broke her leg landing that position. She would NOT have been running on a broken leg. You can literally hear the snap/crunch when she lands.
did the hard thing, right thing, to step aside. there's a reason they have alternates. comparing being off mentally and a physical wound is not the same. and the mental may actually be digestive, hormonal, or emotional, they are related. hopefully she comes back stronger.
Look, she's just a kid that got a bit of fame a bit too early in her career. She's not the first athlete/sportsperson to end up a bit loose in the head.
Add to that she was one of the many sex abuse victims of USA team doctor Larry - it's a tough time for anyone to go through.
I think the question is too simplistic , now obviously she had some issues and maybe these issues should have been picked up sooner , and assisted though..
However , I take your point to be GOAL time , you are going to have to compete , thats part of the Gig. You can't be Jack Nicklaus if you dont play the majors :) .
After initially reading the question I was not fully up with the story , I have since watched a couple of summaries , in change of my answer above.. THIS GIRL IS AN UTTER EGO MANIAC.. I change my answer to CHOKED , CHOKED , CHOKED , and use of the term GOAT ! Man , she is not. Id kick her out for good and tell her to grow up , and SHUT UP ! They have been wayyyyy too soft with this b%tch , horrendous stuff.
1) Why'd you put GOAT if you didn't believe it? Then you put your argument in the OP as an edit, tainting the results. 2) Your counter argument never vaulted again, and wasn't assaulted. What kind of sick fuck tells any athlete "I don't care if your career is over, do it for our entertainment.". Y'all are like the people who wanted Gollata to keep fighting Tyson, in 10 years you'll all look stupid. 3) All the non-athletes need to STFU. The Olympics is not a representation of you, it's not even about each nation. It's about the world coming together in a friendly competition, and showing the world a great athlete can come from anywhere. You brats are so entitled that you can't even stop yourselves from shitting on a rape victim.
Kerri Strug never competed in gymnastics again after that vault and has publicly come out saying she felt forced into doing it and she fully supports Simone Biles decision. Don't use a manipulated and abused 14 y/o as your example for why athletes should be expected to hurt themselves for our entertainment.
She wasn’t 14, she was 18. He first Olympics was 14 in Barcelona her second was 18 in Atlanta in 1996… you know, before you were even born. Many retire around that time she went in to college and a normal life. That vault made her LEGENDARY! She showed greatness!
You didn’t experience the greatness of that moment. It was so memorable we all know her name 25 years later. I also read she said was never forced. But either way, I bet you she would never take it back. Her daughters name is Alana which is a lot like Atlanta, I don’t think think it’s a coincidence.
you've said things that aren't true and accused me of saying things that aren't true. If you don't want to see proof of that I don't really know what else you want
I ran during high school and the pressure on athletes is crazy we may hide it but it sucks and I stand for her especially because of what she went through.. she’s was doing tricks that no other could do so I don’t even think she needs to prove herself or explain herself there’s always next time.
I somewhat agree but pressure also has it’s “bad” outcomes. Billions know her secret so this is a different type of pressure. as an athlete there may be pressure but the sport has to be fun & she said it doesn’t feel as fun for her at the moment. Me being a past runner at state meets experienced seeing nervous activity from the best aka the PRs, to the point where they could only do some much and backed out of the remaining events. mental health isn’t a joke we’re human.
She should have pulled out three years ago instead of in the middle of a gold medal round with her team. I also question if all this is a smokescreen for an unprepared athlete.
mental health is unpredictable, anyone would rather try at least & fight the pressure & mental thoughts. she went as far as she could & that’s better than nothing , she most likely was hoping her mental health wouldn’t interfere with anything with her performance just like any athlete who’s going through things. I know she’s sad since she’s known for being a perfectionist & also her team stands for her & understands , posting countless posts for her.
When y'all are able to get to that level of competition at the age of 24, had sexual abuse by your team doctor, pushed yourself to be the best in the world, and subjected to incredible pressure, let me know. She doesn't owe a damn thing to anyone, least of all you. Her teammates agreed with her departure and her reasons.
I would have taken up a spot in the team from someone who was fit enough to complete. Those slots are cherished and someone had to sit out because of her taking it and then disregarding it. Her teammates are being supportive even though she walked in them in the middle of the competition and left someone else to come in cold and get silver.
I don't buy into the trope that one is "brave" for doing something widely considered trivial. So long as I'm laughed out of relationships, jobs, and public for showing any measure of sadness or struggle, you'll find no sympathy from me.
She was doing stunts that no one was doing did y’all even watch it. i doubt that’s it. having the whole world watch her and know her secret about being sexual abused is a different type of pressure.
no, she most likely feels more pressured since everyone knows her secret & has to do well with everyone watching her & there’s not even that many people there to cheer her on. also there’s rules in the olympics you can’t just fill in someone. athletes try and see how far we can go no matter what we’re going through. I’ve ran at state meets & had team mates fant & etc because of pressure & some even hitting themselves, because they “gave up” later on during the meet while holding Personal records for each event they ran.
Let her be, maybe it was be something that she wasn't able to cope with. Weather it was that or she choked, I don't stand by her. It just seemed more like a publicity stunt to me and we are just adding fule to it. Let her be if all she wants is peace kf mind.
She never should have gone and taken the position in the team from someone who was left at home to watch it in TV. Now it’s a physical thing she says, she gets dizzy in the air. She knew.
She's still an amazing athlete and made the right choice in protecting her mental health but... She chocked... by having GOAT on her uniform she put a lot of pressure on herself to live up to those expectations. Which she has lived up to because she is highly skilled but it just got too real for her because america expects so much of her and hold her to such a high standard
@Jersey2 you couldn't do what this women has done in a million years. So continue to talk your shit from the couch bc you'll never amount to Simone. You'll forever be watching the Olympics from a couch 🥔.
She is on the largest sports stage. She does owe her teammates and the US. She owes her teammates 100% for the team. She is more about her. She owes America her best efforts as she is representing the US. She can sit the fuck home and not go in the first place if she is so scrambled in the head and let others step up and win for the team and the US. Now since you don’t care, sit down.
@Jersey2 - what Ellie-V said was a little too hard to comprehend? Athletes, all in all, contribute nothing to society except entertainment for simple-minded (even boring) people.
She was friggin molested by the team doctor you sexist pig. Don't forken lie about her. All the other girls who were molested by that guy also dropped out. But she stayed in the longest. So shut the hell up because you have no forking idea what that's like. www.washingtonpost.com/.../
YOU and all the other DISGUSTING ARRAGONT SEXIST PIGS should be ashamed of yourselves. You all OWE her an apology and then some. You don't know what it's like.
@MoonStalker And now she has changed her story. It’s not about the doctor, now it’s about getting dizzy. She should never have come to these Olympics as she took the place of someone who would have been thrilled to be there but got left at home to watch in TV. Disheartening.
That, or I voted A just be a contrarian dick today. Like I said, I don't care about any of this. Didn't even know people still watched the damn Olympics.
It's okay that people have opinions, but the ones that do haven't walked 10% of her in any field.
Sorry, just because someone did it with a broken leg doesn't mean everyone has to.
You know why? Because you don't know how severe a person's struggle is or the details of it. She's a world class athlete, who knows what the details of her trouble was?

A broken leg would have been a valid excuse but then we had Kerri Shrug give a team gold with one:

The Olympics? Was that today?
Not interested in seeing other people exercise, especially people who seem to hate my country.
I agree. Viewership in the US is down 49% from Rio games. I am actually rooting against the US women’s soccer team.
did the hard thing, right thing, to step aside. there's a reason they have alternates. comparing being off mentally and a physical wound is not the same. and the mental may actually be digestive, hormonal, or emotional, they are related. hopefully she comes back stronger.

Whomever got her to put GOAT on her uniform did her a disservice as it amped up the pressure.

She was selfish to take a slot on the team. She must have known she was unfit. Ego drove her to do it.
Agreed... Basically an upherself b^tch Im afraid.

she said herself that she felt forced into the vault and she wished she hadn't of done it. What does my age have to do with anything?
You didn’t experience the greatness of that moment. It was so memorable we all know her name 25 years later. I also read she said was never forced. why did you ask the question if you didn't want to hear differing opinions?
I don’t click links here. I wanted to hear what others thought and why. I also wanted to give them my opinion. It’s kind of why sites like this exist.
you've said things that aren't true and accused me of saying things that aren't true. If you don't want to see proof of that I don't really know what else you want

also those of you who have daughters or even sons if you don’t agree with her decision I would be very surprised..
Pressure makes diamonds. It's the cost of greatness. Not something I'd expect Generation Snowflake to understand.
I somewhat agree but pressure also has it’s “bad” outcomes. She’s pissed she couldn’t get gold and blaming everyone but herself.
I think this has a lot to do with it.
She was expecting to ride in on her reputation alone and be handed a sympathy gold by the judges, kinda like a participation medal.
She was doing stunts that no one was doing did y’all even watch it. i doubt that’s it. having the whole world watch her and know her secret about being sexual abused is a different type of pressure.
@mollyyyy37474 , if she was that traumatized she should have given her spot on the team up and taken time to get right.
no, she most likely feels more pressured since everyone knows her secret & has to do well with everyone watching her & there’s not even that many people there to cheer her on. also there’s rules in the olympics you can’t just fill in someone. athletes try and see how far we can go no matter what we’re going through. Umm…y’all act like she saves lives for a living 😂 she doesn’t owe “America” anything 😂
this is sports…WHY DO YOU CARE
Lets have this conversation about a doctor or ANYBODY that’s actually important 🥴
She is on the largest sports stage. She does owe her teammates and the US. She owes her teammates 100% for the team. She is more about her. @BlackBeauty90 You seem so… so… stereotypical, you know what I mean?
DON'T BE A RACIST TOO, YOU'RE BAD ENOUGH WITHOUT ADDING THAT TO THE LIST SCUMBAG!
Don't know about her. Don't care about her. Don't have a real opinion here. Voted A though, cause it's probably true.

She shouldn’t have come to this Olympics. She took a spot that could have gone to an athlete who would have stayed in the competition.
Sunisa Lee was that athlete and she won gold. For USA, nothing was lost.
One less person was on the team. One person was cut and left home because they were full. Such a shame.
