All the sources say the correct answer is 3 million bananas

I'm not sure I buy that though. There are 10,500 athletes in the Olympics, which take place over 3 weeks, which calculates out to about 14 bananas per athlete per day. Will they really eat that many bananas?

I’m gonna say 150 thousand! They have a lot of potassium in them, so I could imagine that most of the athletes would want to eat them during training and certainly after competition to make up the lost electrolytes.

When I was a competitive gymnast, I don't ever remember as eating bananas before or after competition, but we drank a shit load of Pedialyte! It has less than half the sugar of Gatorade, and likes three times the amount of electrolytes. yeah it has less carbs (because it has less sugar) but after a major workout or an athletic performance, you don't need carbs you need electrolytes! It is so much better for you than Gatorade. Although bananas do have more potassium than either the Gatorade or Pedialyte, bananas don't have any NaCL, and sodium chloride is extremely important for neuro-conductivity in not only skeletal muscle, but also smooth muscle (such as that of the heart).

I doubt that I'm right about the amount of bananas, but I hope I helped at least someone with some good information about electrolyte replacement in athletic competition. i. e. Pedialyte being much better for you and much more electrolyte dense than any of the "sports drinks”

Bananas don't keep very well so im guessing they're getting a few extra for spoilage. Its probably not just the contenders eating them either. So I'm guessing it's a stupid big number like 3 million.

Fun fact, banana trees can walk but it's too slow to make for an interesting race.

here's the thing... all that food is going to the Olympic village, which is pretty much a temporary small town, and there's going to be plenty of staff, workers, trainers, lots of support and so many other people, not just the athletes... lol

and yep... I just looked it up
