For millions of baseball fans, Rose will be known mainly for a number,  4,256 , his total of hits,  the most for any player in the history of the game.  But he also got on base more often (5,929 times), played in more big-league games (3,852) and came to bat more times (15,890)  than anyone else . He had the most singles in history (3,215) and the second most doubles. All-Star team at five different positions: second base, right field, left field, third base and first base. Overall, he appeared in 17 All-Star gamesAll-Star team at five different positions: second base, right field, left field, third base and first base. He won 3 batting titles & batted over.300 in 15 seasons. Rose was Rookie of the year in 1963, MVP in 1973, World Series MVP in 1975 & 1978 at 37. Named  TO ALL CENTURY  team in 1999. Rose was long known to baseball officials as a horse bettor. He was warned repeatedly by MLB officials to curtail his gambling, and in the late 1980s, Rose, then the Reds manager, was investigated to determine if any of his activity was illegal. The report revealed that Rose had bet regularly on a variety of sports, and though Rose vehemently denied it,  baseball included . In August 1989, he was banned from the game then declared ineligible for election to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Exposed gambling winnings caused him to spend several months in jail for evasion of taxes.  In 2002 he admitted he had bet regularly on baseball,  including on games played by the Reds while he was their manager, though never against them , asserting that he “would rather die than lose a baseball game.” The HOF is FULL of racists, bigots, drunks, cheaters, wife beaters, child rapists & steroid users. In fact, gambling houses  ARE THE MAJOR SPONSORS  of the MLB! He was a dick, obnoxious, arrogant, spouse cheater, tax evader, allegedly statutory rapist.

There are plenty of famous athletes with checkered personal lives. I’m a huge UFC fan and Jon Jones is great example (met him in real life by the way). He’s had tons of dbag incidents outside of the cage. But he was also a huge draw on the fight card.

Anyway most people watch major league sports for entertainment. However there is an argument to be made about athletes using PEDs. That’s changing the game. That might justifiably keep someone out of a hall of fame (especially if they were caught more then once). Because again they were cheating and changing the game.

But let’s say someone is a clean athlete but a piece of sh*t otherwise? Well during the exact moment of the game they performed incredibly well despite their dbag decisions outside of the game. So two things can be true at once: they were a great athlete yet a pos otherwise.

in my opinion famous athletes should be judged on their performance at the game and let the fans determine whether or not they want to support them given their lifestyles.

NO! Character & Ethics does matter, however there does seem to be a huge lack of that any longer. But kudo's to Hall of Fame committee for not bending. Maybe some young boys or girls will see this and remember your actions do have consequences unlike our government who seems to have forgotten about that.

I’d look on it more favorably now that he’s deceased, but did he bet in favor of his team when he was player-manager? The reason I make this distinction is because he’s only under consideration for the Hall as a player.

I think Bonds, ARod and Clemens should also be inducted since their body of work before juicing was Hall-worthy.
