Is it too late?

I grew up in the south, so I've never had much snow or ice.. I'm 21 with a dream to play competitive ice hockey. I just skated for the second time yesterday and I think I'm doing pretty good already. Some people like to tell me that it's too late for me.. That everyone has been skating since they were 3 which is true.. there were 4 year olds playing full on hockey while I busted my butt a few times. I did make a couple of goals (with no goalie of course). I absolutely think I can do it. I don't care how much time other people have spent, I'm a quick learner. Any input on this? Anyone think I can learn quick enough to get into the nhl? That's a dream for me..

I grew up in the northeast and played hockey since the third grade. I never imagined playing in the NHL although somebody who graduated high school a year behind me had a long career with the Canadiens.

I know that there are people who are natural athletes and maybe could learn to skate at a high level. The kids that are in the NHL today were the 5 year old kids whose parents got up at 4AM to go to the rink and practice.

There were kids in the NHL that grew up in the Bobby Orr era which is when hockey got popular in the US. They were the gold medal olympic hockey team of 1980.

I guess the answer is that anything is possible but you are starting at a huge disadvantage.

I'm ready to make skating my main hobby. I think it's fun. A lot of hours focused on one thing will be better. I'm hoping for someday!

that is not going to happen, no... I am not saying it is impossible, but it would be possible with some who is full of drive... but you're full of doubt, that's why it's just not going to happen

Don't get me wrong, I do have a little bit of doubt, but I have more determination than doubt.. It's the things people say that make me feel like I have no chance

You can't get into the NHL. Almost no one does. There are thousands of college hockey players much better than you and only a handful make it into the NHL.
