Thoughts on horse racing? Is it cruel? Is it anachronistic government subsidized patronage scam? Is it elitist? Fixed? What about dog racing?

Here in New York state it's a vast patronage machine that loses insane amounts of money.

Speaking for myself I have been to the horse track exactly five times in 5 decades. Each one of those times was a family picnic type event either as a kid or me taking my kids. Never going out with the guys kind of thing.

I also think that force racing and dog racing tend to attract the worst kind of degenerate gambler as opposed to casinos.

Well, what do you think? How are things different in other states or countries?

one of my best friend's family do have a sanctuary/ranch for "unwanted/discarded/not useful anymore" racing horses...

the most cruel of horse racing can't seem to be stopped, there's a whole lot of money in it

I’m not sure about that, but before they outlaw horse racing they should outlaw bullfighting. That is pure animal cruelty.

I've nothing against horses running, it's the gambling side I'm not keen on. Bookkeepers always seem to be in the neighbourhoods of those who can least afford to lose money.

The local county fair used ot have horse racing. It was discontinued and I do not miss it. I used ot go to the dog track with my father and uncles. Dog racing was made illegal. I do not think it is very good for the animals.

In ancient Rome they had Chariot racing, gladiator games, plays and Olympic games all designed to entertain the masses. This is no different. "Panem et circenses" they called it, designed to distract the plebs from political & social issues. Today is no different.
