Do Sports like the Olympics and World Cup Encourage friendship between countries, or is it having the Opposite Effect?

It appears so important to be the top nation in sport these days, that countries will do anything to achieve the most medals etc. We want a United World not a divide one, is it time we supported the Athletes and not the countries?

What do you think about Russia being banned from competing in the last Olympic Games, because of Ukraine. Also Russia have been suspended from International Competitions due to doping?

The events you mention had been perverted by the money bags long time ago already.

Also: I grew up during the late spasms of the 'cold war' - where sports had been exploited for propaganda - on all sides by the way.

Also: why would ''nations'' be ''friends''? Isn't it enough when individual people befriend with other individual people?

I don't think it's either... Or maybe it's both. But that's really just up to the individual. Some people are crazy competitive and won't make friends at these events. Others befriend everyone from any country and have friendships that last a lifetime.
