In the distant future, if a team runs out of numbers due to retirements, they might adopt creative solutions like using letters or symbols. They could also expand the current numbering system or introduce a rotating system where numbers are reintroduced after a certain period, respecting honored past players while accommodating new talent. It's an intriguing blend of tradition and innovation! 🏆
Shit. That's not a bad idea AI!! ✅❤️👏

I think about that a lot, as a Celtics fan, haha. Every time I go to the Gahhhhden, I see the retired number banners, and I think of guys currently playing who might get theirs retired, and how few numbers will eventually be left.
I think you just have to un-retire numbers eventually, convert more to a Ring Of Honor sort of thing, or team-specific Halls Of Fame. Basketball less of an issue with 15 man rosters, but the NFL, and 53 guys? That’s over half of the available numbers needing to be spoken for. And that’s without factoring in positional number parameters, which are looser the last few years, but still an added restriction.
Maybe they'll do what they do at small local racetracks when there's 3 cars with the #24 and go with 24B, 24C and 24D. It's dumb but retiring numbers and making them unavailable is silly.
There are many things that could be used

Just go to 6 digits and forget about it for a couple of centuries.
Maybe alphanumeric just like license plates
just bring them back...
Kinda like what they do with graveyards
Three digits seems logical
Unretire.
