I was literally just sitting there watching the European Volleyball Championship, completely blown away by how fast-paced, high-stakes, and ridiculously skilled the whole tournament is. The players are absolute animals on the court, the rallies go on forever, and the energy in the arena is unreal. But it honestly drives me crazy how you can have a massive, high-level international tournament like that, and yet nobody outside of die-hard fans seems to care or even know it's happening compared to men’s sports.

Look, I'm a huge sports fan myself, and I know that in some specific sports, like football (soccer), the men's game has a certain raw speed and physicality that makes it uniquely entertaining. But that doesn't explain why women's athletics across the board get sidelined when it comes to mainstream hype, massive broadcast deals, sponsor money, and just general cultural relevance.

I want to know why people think this gap is still so huge. Is it just that sports media is lazy and refuses to market them properly, do fans have a weird bias against watching women's athletics, or is it because men's leagues had such a massive head-start historically? What's actually keeping women's sports from being treated on the exact same level, and what's going to finally fix it?

Tennis is probably the nearest comparison in terms of prize money equality at Slam level for a couple of decades and much longer in the case of the US open. As professional athletes top players of either gender commit their whole lives to training as tennis players. Selection of the most genetically gifted talent is probably also similar.

Serena Williams maybe perhaps maybe would have been competitive at ATP 100 ranking level at her peak. Anyway, how many people turn out to watch the men's world number 100 play? A lot of people suggest 500+ is a better estimate.

Physicality is different even when professionalism and genetic exceptionalism is equivalent. It just is.

I'm not a huge sports fan but I will occasionally watch women's sports like boxing, volleyball, diving, curling etc. but it's because I find them attractive. I don't think most guys watch women's sports just to see hot women though. The sports guys are into the men's sports. It seems the women also watch the men's sports at a higher rate. For women's sports to be more successful, they need to sell tickets. It would help if women came out and packed the stands to support women's sports. Ticket sales equal higher pay for the athletes, and more sponsorship deals etc.

Well for one men tend to love, watch sports more than women. A lot of people will try to put this on men that some how it’s our fault. The reality is more women should support these ladies sports. It they don’t. Most women can’t even name their local college or professional sports team in their state or country. But a lot of them sure know professional men’s teams. Women would rather support things like reality tv. Here in the states a lot domaine prefer watching things like Love Island, Keeping up w the Kardashians and a lot of other drama shows. Unless I know someone whining g women’s sports to me isn’t as exciting. For instance basketball. Women aren’t dunking the ball, doing alley hoops, stuff like that. It’s mediocre. A lot of them miss layups, easy shots. Even if the media mass marketed the event a lot of people still would t watching it because it’s just not as exciting as men’s sports. They give free tickets away here for WNBA, no one really wants them. Women aren’t out there like men purchasing jerseys, things like that. If I’m being honest a lot of men watch volleyball because the women wear spandex or thongs when playing beach volleyball. I will say though I will watch women’s UFC or women’s hockey because of the violence. But other than that it’s just it as exciting. The other thing too is w in the WNBA there’s all these politics dealing w transgender women, pushing narratives w gay pride night. Yes the men’s tend to do the same at times but a lot of men have refused to partake in that stuff. Women on the other hand tend to flak for all that nonsense.

for many sports... male tournaments have close to 50/50 audiences male and female

for female tournaments... the same women won't show any interest on their sport as women

so, even the women vastly prefer men sports...

I agree, I watch women's sports in general , but I think that in some sports women are better than men and viceversa

I think in volleyball too, at least the women squad here is better than men's, but I also think that men are better than women in football, so that depends on the sport, bur women should receive more visibility.

I love womens sports. Womens Tennis is epic. Rallys last so much longer. Womens golf requires more skill since unlike men women cannot over power a golf course. The WNBA is a hoot to watch. Womens hockey has high skill and more passing since the shots are not as hard. Sprt at a high level is watchable... regardless of gender.
