People labeled as nerds or geeks are people with numerous skills that are often very advanced when compared to normal people. The only undeveloped skills are social ones. I'm not talking about what today is considered nerd / geek as gamer or comic book maniacs or the like, but gifted people.
Gifted people who often also have high cultural capital are hated and bullied by others, who don't. Because de facto they are privileged, they are few, often they have no defenses and are bullied. Even if they are not bullied they are usually excluded or laughed at, mocked for being better than others.
While this causes them to be perceived in a very different way from what they actually are. By normal people they are seen as arrogant and conceited. When in reality their standard is only higher than that of normal people. However, due to the gap determined by the absence of social skills, their communication is completely different. Therefore they have social relations with people, indeed with a few people who want to have them with them by paying the price of the difference in communication or cultural standards.
Nerds are what they have been used to being, that is, survivors. They survived a world that was constantly committing all kinds of harassment towards them.
They usually have numerous defenses created to defend against bullying over the years.
Now try to put yourself in their shoes, you live in a world where everyone is tenentially unintelligent, they don't understand what you say and they devalue what little they understand because they don't know what to do with it, and aggressive towards you, and they want to be right without proving anything to you.
They just lack basic communication and social skills.
We’re not! lol
Well, some of the guys are. But even they usually turn out to be good people once you get past the crusty exterior and get to know them.
they aren't social at all. so they are anything but social
yeah sometimes that is true. social outcasts tend to band together
Show me a girl that has never insulted a nerd, bullied a nerd, or laughed at a nerd because he's a nerd.
I usually sleep with them instead of bully them, does that count?
@ilikefrogsalot it is possible to sexually objectify a nerd, and that is a form of bullying.
Lack of social skills is generally a defining characteristic, so it shouldn't be surprising.
Thats why the nerd in Golden Eye was such a narcissist. Cause it's just true. Nerds are insufferable!!!
I think a majority of dudes 14-30 are nerds nowadays, so I'm not sure that really stands.
Habit?
I wasn't diagnosed with Asperger's until I got out of the military.
Once I learned what it was, coupled with my being an introvert, a lot of my childhood and adult relationships made sense. I was considered arrogant for not wanting to be around other people when in reality I was not comfortable with people that constantly ran their mouth without thinking.
I didn't mean to be rude. I just didn't want to be around them.
But at the same time I wasn't mean.
I like when they make smart remarks.
