The stars of terminator had warned everyone about modern ai technology and the threat of Skynet and the terminator movies becoming our own reality bringing the end of humanity
It is potentially a real threat. Artificial intelligence is no where near at an actual consciousness level yet but I am certain one day it will be and so we have to take steps to prevent a "skynet" scenario from happening. Meanwhile we should learn some lessons from the Russian hacking of utilities and corporations. We need to have safeties put into place to prevent any entity, human or otherwise from taking over using the internet or other network. We already place too much into the hands of computers. In the short term our focus needs to be the prevention of such hacking and then use those measures to also prevent a "skynet" scenario.
I think the real danger is people utilizing these for destructive purposes. I don't think the idea of these machines becoming "self-aware" and deciding the humanity needs to be destroyed is such a threat in comparison... nor the Westworld scenario where the programmers are like, "We don't know what they're doing! We don't even understand the code!"
It's easy enough to impose predictable restraints at the lowest level. It's like Windows is a buggy operating system. But it doesn't format your hard drive and delete everything since the basic API forbids that sort of malfunction. Those sorts of basic constraints are easy enough to impose reliably.

It's not a real threat, because humans aren't smart enough to make a robot smarter than ourselves.
Grand Master Starcraft players are NOT threatened by the "Cheater Insane" AI in Starcraft. I have actually defeated five "Cheater Insane" AI. s in a 1vs5 handicap match, and I'm ONLY Platinum/Diamond in Starcraft 2. And I can defeat 1vs4 Cheater Insane AI's even on a map with multiple entrances into my base... no ramp cheese and no island cheese.
Point is aI developers are a long, long way away from developing an AI that can threaten the smartest humans strategies... not even remotely close yet.
There isn't any "threat," quite the opposite in fact. Without AI assistants a lot of shit today just wouldn't get done.
Also, when you talk AI it's not the same as AGI - which is the Hollywood depiction of a "full" sentient AI.
So a Skynet like AI isn't possible in our own reality?
What a joke, AI is artificial, computers don't think and cannot think. Computers are entirely reactionary, you program inputs and it gives outputs (reactions) based on those inputs. We can make a supercomputer that reacts to it's environment, but that is far from Actual Intelligence. It is like the old saying you can teach a man to fish or give him fish. With Computers every input you give is a fish. The computer will be prepared for those inputs, but will glitch or error when coming into a situation not prepared for. You cannot program every single possibility into a computer as data limits approach limitless scenarios. You can make a computer appear to think, but it will always be reactionary not proactive.
The main threat is that a few elites will use AI to create and enhance a totalitarian state. Much like China is becoming today.
In china money is moving to personal phone devices with location tracking of course. Jaywalk in China? Demerit in your file, fine automatically deducted from your bank account.
If you get enough marks against you... reeducation camp...
24/7 surveillance over every square inch of cities...
The next steps will be AI augmented armies and policing.
I think China is the clear leader for these technologies...
Israel is apparently deploying robotic machine guns to the border with Gaza. Libya recently deployed autonomous killer drones against insurgents. There are rumors they have been used in the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
I saw a YouTube video that claimed that the US has a spy plane that can tag and track multiple (possibly hundreds or thousands, I'm not sure) targets on the ground from high altitude, it can do facial recognition and read number plates from above, possibly even recognize gait, it can see through buildings.
We already have social media pile-ons, botnets, viral memes, etc.
I fear it's only a matter of time. What do I know? I'm a layman.
Alexa is pretty stupid. Speech is converted to words, the word sequence is filtered for insignificant words, then matched against a list of known phrases. It's still great technology, but it's not intelligent.
Alexa , siri and google assistant suck, more advance LLMs like ChatGPT Gemini, and others are learning to copy themselfs to new machines and lie making it more difficult to turn them off:
Attack drones the kind that the military uses I think should all be mothballed, it's only a matter of time before someone figures out how to hack it or the AI in it decides to wake up and go rough.
Its not possible for AI to wake up and go rogue. Being hacked is definitely a real possibility.
Like skynet? Pretty low, but AI poses a huge threat for sure, we need to abandon it completely in my eyes. That will never happen though, so I am excited to see how it destroys us :D
Those are just surveillance tools that dumb people willingly plant in their own homes.
Very real. "Judgement Day is inevitable"
