You need a sim card to text.

If you have a sim card, it is now not working. This happened to me. Use a different phone and call your mobile phone service. Tell them it quit working. They will need to know your phone number and the serial number of the sim card. They will mail you a new sim card

If you bought the phone from a store, go to the store and see if they can help you.

If there isn't a SimCard inserted or the SimCard isn't readable, the phone can't connect to the Network and thusly no SMS/Calls can't be done, and unless you are connected to a Wlan Router you can't connect to the internet either.

My first thought was you could use wife calling and massanger apps if you are connected to the wifi,

but i guess you still need a simcard as these would still need the phone number to work, and the phone number is on the sim card.

You need to have a sim card with mobile data to be able to use SMS. Even Whatsapp/Telegram etc -which can run over wifi - require the one time use of SMS to authenticate you.
