you could point at a nearby automobile and either temporarily or permanently disable its audio/stereo system?

Most of us have had the experience of sitting in traffic beside some idiot playing an audo system at 130 dB, and for me, it is always something that I don't want to hear at any volume level. I have frequenly fantasized about carrying a "remote control device" that I could point at the offending car, click, and. . . voilà, the audio system is dead in the water and I am the hero of all the other drivers.

I am not asking about the legality of such a device. I would simply like to hear some educated opinions about whether such a device could be fabricated.

I can think of two ways of doing it. One is a very localized destructive interface generator. It would take the audio signal invert it 180 degrees and broadcast the audio signal back it would literally cancel the sound.

The other way would be to destroy the electrical system of the other car via an EMP pulse.

The fist is legal as you are just using your own audio system same as them. I know you specified that it wasn't a concern but as a piece of trivia I thought you might appreciate it.

A concern is that it would cancel ALL sound it was directed at including sirens, horns and other audio signaling.

It is possible through Bluetooth if that’s how it’s receiving the music and if you are close enough with a device that has a stronger Bluetooth signal you could overcome his connection to pair up to the radio and stop it or play your music instead 😊 there are also cellphone jammers if they are streaming it through the carrier that would stop it too and also those things the police use to kill the engine

You are not the only one who has fantasized about having such a device. Given that there has already been developed decades back, a device which can either, depending on setting, paralyze a person's heart, or paralyze their skeletal muscles, from a distance a fighter jet would strafe from, it really seems like this is more a matter of being doable in principle yet weighed out as either a societal overstep or likely to bring on some undesirable response. It is widely communicated that the developed world as a whole is widely open to attack by electromagnetic pulse, which could in theory cripple anything electronic from functioning. No computers, no telecom, no Internet, no electric power grid. . . they estimate people would have to live through total breakdown of society in like a month's time, from pharmaceutical withdrawal alone, not to mention supply chain issues for basics like food and water.

The police used to have a device that could launch under vehicles killing the engine. Magnetic or something. They stopped using it in police chases as it wasn’t reliable. Human error. That was trialed back in the 90’s.

Blasting high pitched classical usually breaks through their base, annoying them back. Never failed my mother. 😁

I hope that kinda thing wouldn't work. If I had a car I'd play the music loud from the radio cause it's way better for your ears than playing really loud through headphones, and you can't wear headphones when you're the one driving anyway. 🚙🎶 it's no fun all quiet when the road is already so loud.

If it is a radio station, best thing is a simple CW sweep generator covering the frequency band. A sort of jammer. He would soon turn the level down!

For CD, DVD or old audio cassette, it might be impossible.

Technically yes...

Maybe not in old cars but in "modern" cars you could hack the PC controlling most of the car system and disable the audio system.

I don't know if its possible to do via a wireless transmission or if you need direct access to the electronics though.

Just about anything is technologically possible. For example, how about a high-powered short burst laser that chops through the speaker wires... or power wires to the amplifier.

Obviously. they were trailed a few years ago but they were deemed too unsafe. Mainly as you could disable a pacemaker or fry an innocent persons medical device in the cross fire.

Had one in front of me today - you could hear the whole car vibrate!

Someone once proposed that drivers carry dart guns with "sticky darts" with them. If someone does something really greedy/nasty/dangerous/rude, etc, you shoot the car with the dart and it would stick. When a police officer sees a car with at least 5 darts stuck on it, they are empowered to issue a ticket and remove the darts. Hmmmmmm------

It could be possible but it’d need to ability to interfere with radio frequencies. Or it’d have to be able to fry electric systems so a handheld EMP basically.
