How do I use an external microphone while recording on my camera?

I have a cannon powershot GX7 Mark 2 camera. Apparently external microphones don't connect to it.

I'm going to be recording videos of people speaking so I need good audio & video of them while they talk. However, I need a higher quality audio than the camera has. How do I get high quality sound without connecting the camera to an external microphone?

It would be worth your while investing in external sound recording gear and video editing software so you can combine them later. (Think of movie scenes beginning with a clapper board - this has evolved so that it is super easy to synchronize sound and video later)

I'm sure you'll need to buy a couple of adaptor/convert things you'll have to hook up later

it's a bunch of male to female connector thingies so... I already looked it up on YouTube (searched for Cannon GXT Mark II with external microphone) and few options are there, but it's best if you check it out and decide which one is less annoying or even plausible for you
