Does it matter if I use a 4k HDMI cable chord for an 8k smart TV if it’s only to connect it to the cable box?

Depends. If you're watching something in 8k aka FUHD, then it's why your picture will be terrible or your cable will not work.

Not all HDMI are backwards compatible. Sure they may fit the port - but will not be able to deliver the right signal.

However, most cable boxes don't actually deliver 4k (let alone 8k) and just upscale the picture. Hence it makes little difference what cable you use.

So it has nothing to do with resolution to provide.. my tv does that automatically, you’re saying? Like it’s just to connect regular cable because I can simply stream without it

Yes you can there are very few 4k or 8k sources as yet so odds are your cable box with be putting out 1080.
Your cable will be rated at 4k which means it will handle anything below and possibly 8k but no guarantees it's all down to the quality of the cable not always down to the connections.

Hdmi has the same connection for all versions it's just more features means more contacts are populated and the build quality differs.

Most of hdmi is what the TV supports not the cable

8k - only from a pc right now or a streaming service

4k - streaming service or console maybe cable and sky in limited capacity

If a TV can run 8k it can do anything down to 480i same with a cable it will work on any lower resolution than it's rated up to.

Some cables have extra features like ethernet or power over hdmi these features can be used by the TV if it supports them.

All hdmi connections fit all hdmi ports

I work in tech support and get calls all day about people who have bought the latest TV and expect a top notch picture from channels that barely produce SD pictures

Probably not, as i am assuming the cable box doesn't provide an 8K resolution image anyway.

I don't know about a video game console which puts out 8K resolution, maybe in the future.

PS5 and XBox are as far as i know only capable to display 4K.

But its the resolution of the input device which matters, unless your input device (BlueRay/Videogame console/PC/streaming/TV programm...) doesn't provide 8K Resolution you won't need an 8K Cable. Because your TV can only display the resolution fed into it.

What integrale77 said. Or simply, no it does not matter. The HDMI is more than sufficient to handle the full cable signal.
