Modern telephone was invented in 1876. There were simpler telephones made before 1876 but they were simple and not usefel.

The telephone is an extremely useful invention. It's use would have been apparent to governments and the wealthy. There'd be a lot of demand. Telegraph lines were also all over the place. Meaning poles were already in place to hang phone lines and people experienced in installing cables already existed.

First telgraph call between USA and UK was made in 1858. Did you know that?
