Tesla stock has taken a beating and Elon Musk reassured stockholders that the autonomous car will be developed shortly. He says that they will do it this year.
I don't think for everywhere, maybe like Interstate and some special lanes in cities. How would the cars communicate with each other and old vehicles that do not have connectivity? I buy used cars, and out of 3, only one of them has any kind of connectivity, the first version of ford sync, which is broken.
Even if those issues are ironed out the state of Louisiana won't be ready for them for at least 2 decades, especially New Orleans. There are potholes down here that literally swallow cars. Like if you don't know where they're at, cars fall in and the axles break, that isn't on waze, maps or anything.
The infrastructure is just shit down here from years of corruption, and neglect. We're still balancing our state budget with federal Katrina money, that storm was 19 years ago.

It’s unfortunate…such fun place to visit. If one not being careful can break an ankle walking down those streets.

@midnightmoon05 I agree, the robberies are starting to come back on Bourbon as well since they can't hire anyone for NOPD and the state police won't help out (one of the mayors insulted them). When they went on I think it was the 4th federal consent decree for corruption they raised the pay, got rid of private police details, and put in place a ridiculous contract for 3 years plus, if you quit, get fired, or transfer you have to repay all 3 years of pay, and all training costs.
Signing a contract for the military isn't that punitive. - +1 y
Can’t get anyone to be a cop anymore?… 🤦♀️.
I did feel very safe walking around French quarter day/night. The city tried very hard to keep the area clean/safe. Hard working locals like anywhere you are in the world just want to make a living. I just wish people see the positives and what the world offers us vs. stating how dangerous these places are based on social media.
My sister went out at 1:30am to get meds for her baby. She was fine.
The city is doing a good job for attracting tourism. The festivals/parades were well organized and fun.
I really don’t understand the fear. - +1 y
Didn’t know you are in New Orleans.
- +1 y
@midnightmoon05 Close by, buying in Metairie, Kenner or NS is way cheaper and close enough. I only worried about the crime there because I worked in the quarter for a couple years. You're correct though, crime in Orleans now is like a ripple compared to the waves in the early 2000's, my teenage years were joyous... also adding to those problems.
Anyway I do agree that it's a great area, I haven't been anywhere else where the food is as good, or you can just grab a case of beer and some food to grill to hang out with your neighbors out of the blue.

Advances in technology, regulatory frameworks, public acceptance, and infrastructure improvements are all predictor variables of autonomous operation that are difficult to accurately anticipate.13 Reply
They've been on the road in Nevada for 11 years. I called bullshit on 18-wheelers being able to negotiate the traffic in big cities, but I was wrong about that. The self-driving trucks will get to the edge of the city, and pull into a truck stop. Humans will be there to drive the truck into the city, and deliver the load. Then the human will drive the truck back to the truck stop, it will be refueled, etc, and sent on its way to the next city.
I just asked the AI on my phone to write you a limerick. It took.5 seconds to write this one...
There once was a driver named Kevin
Who took exit seven without thinkin'
He ended up lost
And paid a hefty cost
Now he always checks signs before blinkin'

+1 yI don't know about the ten years, but I am fairly certain that my kids will see laws prohibiting cars that are not self driving. That way the government will be able to decide if, when, and where citizens may travel.
016 Reply- +1 y
Yep. The government is already controlling thermostats and Alexas in homes. Controlling your vehicle is not a stretch by any means.

Colorado remotely shut off citizens ACs last summer.

@TrueConfection i was thinking of getting a wi fi thermostat so I could turn my A/C on while i was driving home so the house would be cool by the time i go home but I thought better of it.

Old fashioned is better.

I would surrender my computer for a typewriter as long as it comes with a bottle of White Out. 😂
I wouldn't want to go back to coffee the old fashioned way though. My Keurig and I are inseparable. 💕 - +1 y
Why not?

Cut and paste is nice, but I used to type 95wpm and can retype quickly. We used to write stuff out on paper and then type the final draft.

I suck on gag because I use my phone. I take online courses now and then and I think my typing is still around 75wpm.
I miss hand written letters. - +1 y
I'd much rather get a letter in the mail than an email or text.

+1 yWe've already had `em for the past 4 or 5 years! I'm told that the people that make them would never own one because it can cause more accidents than humans can. If a leaf or even a snowflake blows in the sight of the sensor, it could think that's a human and it will suddenly break or steer away and possibly kill the people in it or near it outside.
00 Reply There are self driving cars now.

But yes, I do think perhaps fifty years we’ll have transportation like Minority Report, with lots of hybrid cars below. Too bad Elon OCD’d on Twitter instead of maintaining focus on Tesla. Glad I sold early.04 Reply- +1 y
@OddBeMe Elon is usually a few steps ahead of everyone else. Thewill not carry the weight. technology has too many disadvantages. How many bridges will have to be replaced for example. These vehicles are thousands of pounds heavier than a conventional car because if the batteries, The bridges will not carry the weight.
- +1 y
The bridges were built back in the 50s when we had a 90% tax rate and could afford to build all the highways. They’re crumbling from bicycle use.
Don’t put so much stock in billionaires. Especially ones as sensitive as musk is. His Asperger’s or whatever is gonna allow GM to pass him by in the EV tech.

Who knows what the future may bring & although we already have self driving cars I wouldn’t trust one now or trust them in the future.

most likely will not get one. I enjoy driving too much to let the robot do the work.00 ReplyProbably, given our hyper-managerial control freak elites want us to move to a subscription/rental model for everything and also retain the ability to freeze you out of the ability to travel, bank, or even eat, should you voice dissent.
00 ReplyI'm sure there will be, although I wouldn't own one. I prefer to do my own piloting.
01 ReplyProbably I'm waiting for cars to just all eventually start hovering like the Jetsons
