Are you excited about self driving cars and why?

I don't get it. I like to drive.

The main value I see for this is cars become so expensive, that many rent a car daily, which drives to them an takes them to work... reducing up front costs but increasing long term costs of travel. Maybe insurance costs are lowered by managing accidents... maybe.

The other is "taxis". But in this model, taxis... go away... most people, have a taxi.

Why do you care about self driving cars?

I'm indifferent towards them.

There are both positive and negative implications of self driving vehicles. I prefer driving myself, and am not looking forward to giving that up. However, I see so many terrible drivers, every day, that removing them from the equation can only be a net positive.

Mostly, I just don't feel as if society is fully ready for self driving vehicles. The technology isn't there, yet, anyway, and there are a number of issues to work out, before they see regular use.

Since self driving vehicles will be sharing the road with human operated vehicles, how do you assign blame in the event that an autonomous vehicle is involved in a collision? Is it the owner's fault, even though they were not in control? The manufacturer's fault? Is it automatically the fault of the human operated vehicle, even if the autonomous vehicle malfunctioned?

What about those situations in which the self driving vehicle detects a possible collision, and the only way to avoid it potentially endangers the occupant? Does it hit the pedestrian that walked out in front of the vehicle, or does it swerve into a pole and kill the occupant, instead? Who's life is more valuable in that situation, and how is the vehicle programmed to make that decision?

Personally, I'm just not comfortable giving up that much control. I'd rather be in charge of my own fate, and my own safety. Sure, the total number of accidents & fatalities will decrease, but the tradeoffs may be too hard for people to accept.

They'll help the elderly and disabled. Other than that I think they're dangerous because they're in the wrong hands. Cars you can't repair yourself are a huge red flag and we've been seeing that for decades. Now we're seeing things like the Cyber Truck that doesn't even have a steering wheel attached to the front wheels. If anything goes wrong you can do nothing. It's dangerous in another way as well. You're always connected to the net. Eventually it will be so that the car will drive you to places others want you to go not where you want to go. These cars will become a dystopian horror.

I've seen a short video where 4 so-called intelligent cars were stuck at an intersection. No accident, just stuck in all 4 directions. As none of the programmers ever thought about teaching these cars basic manners and no algorithm tells them to back up and deduct 10 seconds of their planned route and time calculation, they can be stuck there for ages. They would probably go into panic mode when their batteries are near exhaustion.

He wasn't drunk. He wasn't high. He was just an ordinary guy heading to a business meeting.

You know in tests self driving cars so far have killed kids getting off a school bus in 100% of simulations, right?

Situations where a human would have approached very differently.

I never blamed the driver. Not even as a child. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong moment was all. He reacted as best as he could, called the cops and ambulance himself. Just a decent guy in the wrong place.

I'll never trust AI to drive a vehicle anyone I care about is in.

I Kept a Gas Guzzler for several years and never drove the ' Antique', as it was like going back in time, 50-75 years - Oil changes, Filter changes, oil leaks, fluid leaks, carrying a 'radiator' and water pump, a "fuel pump, Changing differential grease, transmission fluid... Shall I go on?

I've had this with bluetooth especially but certain phones in the past. It causes problems for me physically, others report it as well. Tesla was terrible, couldn't wait to get out of it. driving it was fine other than the engine braking.
I test drove several and it's a "no". Rented an E car in norway and after turning all that crap off, it was good... really good going downhill charging up! Getting powered up was a bit of a hassle and concern.. finding open charger, time to charge, etc.. but goes with the E car and they designed around it so it works on vaca.
